hitler's invasion of poland was more than 2 years prior to the pearl harbor attack.

wwii seems long in part because it's much better understood when you include the lead up, the other territorial grabs, hitler's rise to power, etc, some of this was de facto war anyway, even if no shots were fired.

US corporations were doing business with Hitler and Japan until Pearl Harbor. And the US was also preventing Jewish refugees escaping the Nazi death camps from entering America too. Not much of a de facto war if you ask me.
