Looking for information regarding my military medals
Edited on Wed May-25-05 08:43 AM by olafvikingr
I have done a little research on this, but I am looking into how I go about getting replacements for my medals that I was awarded while serving in the Navy.

Good Conduct Medal - Never actually received the medal because it was awarded at the time of my separation from service.

National Defense Medal

Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal

Southwest Asia Service Medal

Navy Sea Service (Ribbon)

I also was awarded and qualified to wear an Expert Rifleman Medal and an Expert Pistol Shot Medal, however, neither of these show up for some reason on my DD-214. I was a Gunners Mate and legitimately earned these awards but I do not know how I go about getting replacements for these if they do not show up on my DD-214. Is there somewhere else in my service record where these would show up? Is there a process I can follow to insure that these are in my record?

Thought some other veterans here might know off the top of their head. Any advice?

1. Answers:

Let me know if that does not help. I am still in and have people I can call to get answers.

2. Additionally...
I never actually received my Honorable Discharge document from my time in the Navy. I had also served for one year in the NYS Army National Guard, and did receive my honorable discharge for that service.

5. Well, to start, you need to get a DD215
...to correct the missing awards that should have appeared on your 214. If the PNs did their job, that info should be in your Service Record, and maybe even mentioned in your evals. If you have a copy of your SR that will be helpful. If not, you need to get one.

You will also have to fill out and submit a SF180. You can get that here: http://www.va.gov/vaforms/

This link is service specific. http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/questions/awards.html

Also, if you live near a PERSUPPDET, give them a call and ask a PN to help you get the DD215 sorted out--if they aren't too busy, they will help you with the process (be sure to send a letter to the CO of anyone who helps you out, get their name, and send the praise to the person's CO, not the chief, not the First Class--it helps--as you no doubt recall, LOAs are noted on evals, and reflect well on the individual).

Alternatively, you can call the Awards people over at the Pentagon and ask them for a hand as well--best to get an email address, and do it that way, those folks can get pretty busy, but they'll give you a hand if they can.
