Guards "flushed a Koran in the toilet," Washington Post
Hope this is not a dupe. I saw this in Late Breaking News but did not see it any other place.

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, May 25, 2005; 4:26 PM

Numerous detainees at the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba told FBI interrogators that guards had mistreated copies of the Koran, including one who said in 2002 that guards "flushed a Koran in the toilet," according to new FBI documents released today.

2. So the story was true. What was fake was the reaction overseas.
When will the White House, issue a retraction.

6. Not exactly, but something very interesting is happening here
the Newsweek story claimed that a pentagon investigation uncovered the Qur'an abuse. Newsweek's source then said he wasn't sure the investigation actually claimed that, but that it did happen. So Newsweek retracted the claim about the investigation, not about the Qur'an.

I know, it's a subtlety lost on the public.

What is fascinating, though, is that the media is actually fighting back here. Since the Newsweek story, they've been digging to prove that the desecrations did happen, and now they are reporting that the FBI even reported that it happened.

I think Bush finally pissed them off. I think they are starting to push back. Probably it's just a warning to BushCo to tone it down, but maybe it's a fullblown revolt. The media knows Bush set them up, and that Bush used a technicality to blame them. I think they are upset by it.

Maybe.

3. I love it
McLellan's little whine fest just made all the news-outlets desperate to get the real bottom of this story. Way to attract attention to the negatives of your administration Mr. McLellan, oh, and you're a dick!

they have zero validity. Our word against theirs kind of thing.

9. Maybe it was the way Newsweek wrote it? I don't get it?
There are several stories floating around with this information so we know Newsweek is not the first to break this story. Why are they taking the heat for this? Come on Newsweek, stand up for yourself...

from what I understand.

15. Bush Fascists work the simplistic lie.
Newsweek published a report from an "offical source". This anon source recanted so Newsweek had to retract. Smells like a setup to me. Of course the BF twisted this to make it seem that the story was a lie and the NW caused deaths. Smells like Rove. Peww.

"We've already addressed this issue, and Newsweek retracted its story. Although there are other steps we'd like to see Newsweek take, the White House considers this matter closed. Next question."

21. The WH made a massive blunder in their 'strategery'
...when they attacked the press, and got SPECIFIC about it. The press was doing a fairly good job and rolling over and playing dead for them, but then, they went after a single organization and two individuals. The rest of the lapdogs woke up and realized, if we don't call these clowns on this, we could be next.

The era of media compacency is coming to an end. And it is about five years past time for that, but better late than never.

these people have been desecrating the Christian Bible since they took office, why should a "foreign" religion's holy text be treated any differently?

24. They didn't "Flush" Qur`ans, they put them in "Shit Buckets"
http://www.as-sahwah.com/viewarticle.php?articleID=1229...

NEXT STRIKE CAUSED BY QUR’ANS BEING PLACED IN ‘SHIT’ BUCKETS

"One of the reasons for the second hunger strike which occurred around June/July2002 (by my reckoning, we were not allowed to know the time or the date) was the desecration of the Qur`an. One of the Arabs explained to me that brothers had been used in Kandahar detention facility (the same I was held in) to empty the "shit buckets" (I don’t mean to use profanity but that is what the soldiers called them), one if not more actually saw a copy of the "Uthmani" Qur`an dunked in the faeces and urine in a "shit bucket", which could only have been done by a soldier. The brother that told me this also expressed his grief that they could not do anything to retrieve it."

http://www.as-sahwah.com/viewarticle.php?articleID=1229&pageID=456&

"We witnessed on numerous occasions US soldiers mishandling the Quran and also desecrating it. In Afghanistan, we witnessed US soldiers throwing the Quran in buckets that were used to urinate in, on purpose. In Guantanamo, the Quran was intentionally thrown on the floor, even after the soldiers were told not to do it, for the sole purpose of making the detainees angry and the soldiers knowing that they can get away with what they were doing. It was also stood upon, again thrown in the toilets, had obscene language written in them by the soldiers."
