My Theory On Elections
It's the economy stupid.

When the economy is in trouble, the American people call on the Democrats.

The Democrats come in and tighten the national belt. They get a control on spending and taxes, and get the situation stabilized.

Then the boom sets in, and the People want a party. And they elect the Republicans to have the party.

After the party, they send for the 'Rats again, to clean up the mess. :)

if that is the precise cycle, but there is a cycle. I believe in what Wilson said, and FDR repeated numerously, read my sig.

3. I'm talking about RECENT history
The Republicans used to good for the economy, but the parties have switched places on that issue.

5. RECENT history includes two Bush's

And don't forget Sr's influence on South Korean policy. I don't think that could constitute a major incident. Reagan and his crappy tax cuts for the rich actually worked and the economy wasn't that bad.

Of course Bush 43 must be pounded on his economy, but once this 14 yesr attempted coup by the Bush family and thier interests ends, we will not have the economy to turn to at all.

But the cycle will still persist.

The Voodoo economics worked in the growth period of the 80's just as Clinton and GATT and WTO and NAFTA worked in the 90's. Neither case is a precendent, but a situation of circumstance. So far as I've seen, FDR and Keynes seemed to be on a much closer path to a sustainable system than the Republicans. Beyond that, FDR had to work against an Isolationist country at the time. We need to revive the majority that is the left, and show the world "The Economic Consequences of the Peace".

I didn't understand the criticism of Dems as "deficit spenders." When republicans are the deficit spenders. Please.

8. The economy sucked in 1980
and the Democratic candidate lost. A bad economy is bad for whichever party controls the White House.

9. My theory on elections
Its the third party stupid.

Whichever major party splits in to two, loses.

Without ross perot, there would never have been a clinton.

That said, it is about all things being interconnected, and you and me. If we have done the most in every day of our lives to bring life liberty freedom and peace to all those around us, radical change can be brought to government.

Hopefully, a disenchanted republican center politician will stand against bush and split the repulican vote... that is a better wish given the reality of the past few elections... its not the economy.

10. Without a nader, there never would have been a bush.
I deleted a line from the previous post, as it makes it harder for democrats to be objective being such an emotive issue... but indeed it is really about third parties... why the hell IS there a green party? If the democrats were doing their job, there should be no such need. Best to fix ones own house... we have real grassroots unity to consider, as in the network of souls that will elect the next democratic president needs a huge injection of unity and single purpose. The splintering of the left is our own fault.

12. ha ha!
God, i remember when i first really thought that in highschool civics class.. I really believed it seeing local community councils. My city council at the time, santa monica california, was quite socialist. I figured that since the films industry was based in that area, it would naturally rule the entire country ideologically. Clearly other folks saw similarly at the time, neocon sorts, who decided to reverse and pervert the unifying power of TV and broadcast media to their own political ends.

In a nation as large as the US, to not have any truthful news source is a downright travesty... to the point that shooting your television with your handgun may indeed be the best political move.

Then in a subsequent world, nobody will trust mass media, and huddled in mud huts, we can discuss how powerless we are.

Clearly the constitution has grossly failed to predict the emergence of braodcast media and its ability to completely pervert the "justice for all" principals of the constitutional republic. Mass media creeped up on the constitution and took it over in the blink of an eye. Now you are nothing but a political target market segment in a media database of 280,000,000 rows... and selective political marketing messages are sent to each row... in your mail slot and whichever media you are statistically likely to touch... that using corporate-evolved marketing techniques, a well financed political party cannot lose EVER due to the power of mass brainwashing.

Britain does not have a written constitution, and when broadcast technologies emerged, the people realized that it would pervert the course of justice if not regulated as a public good... and hence the BBC, chartered with telling the truth on the public behalf.

Becasee the american media corporations are allied to the energy/military sectors, this well financed braiinwashing is around wars for energy... all legitimized by a state of mass hypnosis... the media-state. The only way to recover any semblance of democracy without regulation of television is to smash every TV box, radio and transmitter until the public is free... like in the film "running man".

I sat in a room in germany with a family with a stool in the corner engraved with the star of david. I asked the family about the stool, as they were not jewish and it turned out the stool belonged to the grandfather who was in the nazi army in stalingrad, captured and spent 10 years in a russian prison. He had given his son the chair, and his son proudly keeps it in the sitting room as a rememberance of his father. The chair came furniture looted from jewish homes during the holocaust.

I realized that seeing that chair was the most personal, "REAL" touch i ever had with the holocaust, everything else distant intellectual knowledge from "the world at war" and various books. The grandfather was very brainwashed nazi foot soldier and stayed that way until his death. Hitler was a great man to him, and he was leading the german people to take the oilfields.

I use the anecdote to explain both the unreality of media-brainwashing knowledge vs direct contact... and how long the brainwashing cycle takes between mass media wash cycles. The war on drugs will be worshipped by some sick grandfather some day, as will be the war on iraq. Germany is now among the most wealthy and socialist, peaceful nations that are america's allies. The new brainwashing cycle, the german media is now outstanding.

Is that a democracy, a timoocracy or a plutocracy. As power is wielded by a small military-media elite who brainwash the public to elect them, i woudl be inclined to call that a timocracy.

Oh well, i've a fascination with high school physics.. ;-)
