Edited on Mon Sep-22-03 01:47 AM by pruner
everyone knows our government "endorses" candidates in foreign elections.

has the reverse ever happened?

can you imagine Schroeder or Chirac saying something like "I urge all Americans to vote in favor of the Democratic party candidate next November for the sake of both our nations, and the world in general."

1. I don't think it would be helpful
Foreigners telling us what to do? Probably won't play in Peoria.

3. I'm not saying it would be helpful…
but I think it'd be absolutely hilarious.

and unless the candidate actively solicited the endorsement, I don't think it'd really hurt.

6. It will probably just come as a "coincidental" photo-op
A pre-election meeting between the Dem candidate and any foreign leaders would not be extraordinary, I think. Snap and the "endorsement" is in the can.

2. Well...
considering that John Howard held a special press conference to congratulate the repukes for their result in the 2002 elections, you can bet that he'll have the kneepads on for '04.

8. USSR?
Used to be that if Khrushchev so much as had a kind word for any President or Presidential candidate it was like the kiss of death in the U.S.

11. Lula (prez of Brazil) had talks with Kirchner...
...then-candidate and now President of Argentina.

I recall Lula himself went touring the world to have talks with chiefs of state during his own election campaing. Most of then didn't have any problem providing smily hand shakes for his photo album.
