1. I doubt it...
When you're in a war zone, you're much limited to a narrow environment. Perhaps a few in the support bases may know? They will not find out until it's too late.

6. They won't find out.
I remember the intensive propaganda campaign at the beginning of the overt action in Vietnam. I, and those around me, drank it right up. The military spends a lot to keep the minds and hearts of our guys "pure."

7. My young Army friend has drunk the kool-aid.
He believes in the myth of the "liberal media." They were so very isolated in Tikrit on the ammunition supply base If all they heard was Ru$h and Faux news then they have no idea what's really happening.

I'm just glad he made it back from Iraq alive and in one piece. He's in Washington State now and may be deployed to Afghanistan next.

8. If Rush or Stars & Stripes don't tell them, they probably don't know
:(

Information is a hot commodity to soldiers "in the field".

When they DO hear about something, their higher ups are eager to tell them it's propaganda.:(

9. A-L-L of my military friends don't care about Bush, and are happy for War
A good friend of mine who is now an Ex-Friend became an ex-friend because she couldn't handle the truth about the war. She coudln't handle that I had a different opinion, that I wasn't in the military, and that I was able to speak my mind freely about how I felt about the president and the war. Her views (and she was active duty AF and stationed in the middle east at the time) was that even IF the war was based on bad evidence, that's okay because Iraq is filled with bad people that need to be killed, and she's more than happy to help killing them.

Oh, and in her views, the reports about civilians being killed is propaganda. The reports about bombs being dropped on weddings is propaganda. The reports about bombs looking like aide packages is propaganda. The reports of Fallujah is propaganda. EVERYTHING is propaganda...and she should know....she's an E-4...so you know, straight from GW's lips to her ears, in her opinions.

She saw nothing wrong with CNN and MSNBC being blocked from base TV's, but Fox news being shown. She sees nothing wrong with DU being blocked from base computers, but FR being completely available.

She says that when I protest against the war, I'm protesting against her.

Her husband is pro-military, as are all of my other military friends.

Oh and they all considered themselves "Democrats until Bush straightened things out", as one friend put it.

Now, my Ex-friend is out of the military, but works for a military contractor. She calls herself liberal, but wouldn't know a free thought if it hit her upside the head. In her mind, EVERY bit of negative news coming out about the war is a LIE.

Oh, and torture is okay because they're bad people. She would fully understand if she were captured and tortured. It's part of the job when you're in the military. When I asked her about civilians and non-military being rounded up and tortured, her response was "Well, that's what they get for killing our boys"

11. Is DU REALLY blocked from Military computers??
If so, we need to do something to get them the real news.

13. It was at the time, which was a few years ago
She was in Quatar, and this was around 2002....but I don't remember the months.

I had sent her several links via email to DU, and suggested that she sign on and become a member. The website was blocked due to "inappropriate content"--the same comment that came up if she tried to visit any site that had porn or sex in it.

It wouldn't let her get on if I sent her a link to a particular thread, and it wouldn't let her get on if I sent her a link to the homepage. The whole DOMAIN name was blocked.

Just for kicks, I sent her several links to FR, Lucianne.com, Little Green Footballs--all of those purulent sites. ALL of them were accessable, even threads that had obvious profanity in them (we thought that might be one reason for the blocked domain).

But alas, that was just fine with her, and I think she actually LIKED FR.

Equally, CNN and MSNBC were not shown on base TV's, but FOX News was pumped in 24 hours a day. As was Rush Limbaugh's radio show.

But that's okay to her. Nothign wrong with that. This site probably had tons of gay antiAmerican porn on it or something :eyes:

That being said, we haven't talked in over a year. She's out of the military and I don't know of anyone who is overseas at bases now, so I don't know if the ban is still in place...

14. She wasn't very sympathetic to those that died, either
Altho she swung in opinion depending on whether the talk was about a soldier dying:
(Hey! They volunteered! THey read the fine print when they signed up. Don't come crying to mama when your legs get blown off),

or her getting an extended tour in the Middle East:
(Hey! I signed up during peace-times! I've got a kid! My husband is in the service! I don't like the heat! I'm allergic to Sand! It's not fair! I shouldn't have to go there! I didn't read the fine print! I was coerced! I only signed up because I had no real-life out-of-military job skills and NEEEEED a job that would pay me to be a glorified paper pusher! Not fair! I'm a volunteer! Why don't they send in more National Guard? More Marines! More Army! More Navy! More CoastGuard! More ANYONE but the Airforce! Oh poor me...it's against my religion to eat Falafel. Did I mention I'm allergic to Sand? wah wah wah)

10. Thought I'd see Colin Powell leading a column of tanks up Pennsylvania Ave
That would have been the perfect end to Bush's coronation on January 20th.

Alas, it never happened.

It's never a good idea to train tens of thousands of people how to kill and then make them hate you.

I've heard it suggested that this was the real reason Kennedy went through with The Bay of Pigs even though he wasn't going to send air support. He didn't want thousands of trained, armed fighters sitting around being mad at us, so he sent them off to die.

And I think this is the REAL reason they don't want gay people in the military. They don't want gays learning how to defend themselves.
