"Mission Accomplished" Banner on Lincoln is a Dem Fib
The WH didn't order it is the spin. The captain of the Lincoln put it up to say his crew's mission was accomplished. And Bushie never meant it - he never said it. Uh huh - tell me another whopper.

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/politics/whispers/whisphome.htm

After weeks of Democratic assaults that President Bush was a nitwit for declaring "mission accomplished" in Iraq during his May 1 landing and victory speech on the USS Abraham Lincoln, the White House is bidding to set the story straight. The issue should be a simple one: Bush never uttered those words. "The president," argues communications boss Dan Bartlett, "said exactly the opposite: The mission continues." But Bush stood under a banner declaring "mission accomplished." Why? Bartlett says that the Lincoln's captain had the banner made up to thank his crew for the longest-ever carrier tour, not to declare the war over. "It is something the troops are really proud of," says Bartlett. "Of course they can hang the banner." But the picture was all the Demos needed. "On TV," he says, "they never play the bite of the president, they just show the image with the banner." Democratic polls show that the public buys their spin, which doesn't really surprise Bartlett. "Look, perception becomes reality," he says. "But the facts don't back it up."

3. That is a complete joke
The entire set up, from the position of the carrier to make it look like it was far out to sea, to the flight suit, to the banners, to the timing of the fake flight was a fucking Photo Op generated by Rove from start to fucking finish.

These bastards can't take responsibility for ANYTHING

If Clinton had that banner up in place. We'd never hear the end of it. Apparently, nothing shames this administration.

11. They could order him to reposition the ship, but not a banner?
The ship was so close to shore they asked the captain to turn it around so the camera angle would not catch the coastline in the horizon. And the return to port was delayed by a day to keep the ship far enough out to allow Bush his photo op. This has all been documented. Click here for some referenes. Now we are asked to believe the White House had no control over the banner in the camera shot, right behind Bush? It's dual meaning, success for the ship, and in the war, was intentional. I think they were very successful in the assault on Baghdad, so I don't see why they are backing off of this. The only problem is they were too fucking greedy to give up control once the true US mission was accomplished. Why do we need complete control of the rebuilding effort when we have little to no recent experience, but the UN does?

(Okay, we all know the answer to that one, Halliburton).

...and who knows this better than Bush?

Lemme count some of the "perceptions" he's manufactured:

Bush in front of Statue of Liberty
Bush in front of Mt Rushmore (with appropriate profile of course)
Bush with cheering soldiers
Bush in aviator's costume
Bush with admiring school children (Note: Blacks up front)
Bush in front of a godzillion American Flags
Bush in front of backdrops with messages:
Fighting for Jobs
Growing the Economy
Protecting the Homeland
etc: etc:

spin spin spin spin spin

:puke: :puke: :puke:

13. Oh right. The carrier's Graphic Design dept. did it.
Edited on Tue Sep-23-03 05:58 PM by Cat Atomic
It's sort of uh... designed. It's not some laser printer sheets taped together.

That whole event was orchestrated from top to bottom.- right down to the late afternoon lighting. They did Reni Liefenstahl proud. The idea that the banner wasn't even their idea is laughably idiotic.

15. Just how stupid do they think we are?
Lordy!

I want every Democratic candidate to use this: Lil George's carefully staged photo op backfired, as he might say, "big time." And now, less than five months after strutting around on the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln, this corrupt administration is trying to tell the American people that the banner wasn't really their idea at all. Well, it sure looks like a premature declaration now, so I guess that's why they're trying to distance themselves from their own stage managing. But I know the American people aren't fooled by their after-the-fact excuses.

{File the serial numbers off and use it for your own! The author won't mind.}

18. Yeah. The front men were on the carrier making sure everything was OK
The wanted the landing to be later in the evening so the lighting would be more perfect. They wanted the carrier turned around so people wouldn't see the San Diego skyline...But, they over-looked the huge banner saying "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" ???

22. In addition to this,
whatever happened to the Victory Parade they were planning? Bloomberg offered to throw a ticker-tape parade in NYC, and the White House was considering the offer. Can you imagine if they'd followed through with it? I guess they couldn't because the troops didn't come home.

"Major combat operations in Iraq are over, and America and her allies have prevailed."

Doesn't that mean the same thing as "mission accomplished?"
