" Eminent domain"
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 10:00 AM by Texasgal
Let me see if I get this straight.

The Supreme court rules that if a business will be a money making thing for your town or city, the government can LEGALLY force you to move, and give up your home.

I realize that roads, highways and water treatment plants have been in the Eminent domain logs for a long time.

But... Now this? What? Do we live in fucking RUSSIA?

12. But it's NOT EVEN fucking Phizer, in this case!
The City of New London turned that neighborhood into a goddamned moonscape just HOPING someone would come in and "redevelop" it!

There are no plans. There is no developer. There is NOTHING!

Be afraid. Be very afraid. If your town decides that it can get more tax money from a million-dollar McMansion that from your modest house, now they can just take it and give it to the yuppie bastard who has more money than you do.

That's just exactly what this decision means.

8. thousands evicted for wal mart
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 10:08 AM by oscar111
pen pal says in his city, thousands of poor had Project homes torn down

so wal mart could locate there.

they threw in, besides walmart, the building of some upscale and poor housing too, but the goal was walmart, IMHO.

all projects have waiting lists, so where did these go to?

penpal says all media were silent on that.

7. See one of the other many threads about this topic...
especially the posts from NSMA, patcox2 and OldLeftieLawyer for very informed opinions of what the ruling actually means.

9. The silent fact
that they have always had this right on paper is mainly an issue because SCOTUS wakes us up to the new part of the equation. The lack of process and political price in the decision making application is what is turning this potential into a real fascist weapon.

Before, an isolated incident where the community and the individual loses to arrogant powers at the helm would be an exceptional cause celebre. With the destruction of democracy and the example of corporate raping overseas suddenly the threat really does seem massive and not exceptional.

In advance, before widespread abuse of eminent domain even happens we are alerted that in the hands of THIS rampaging extremist GOP, the courts are
firmly on the side of any application of this exception. It is bulldozing
rights to legitimize the actions of illegitimate tyranny.

SCOTUS should not be the focus, but the gut knowledge people refuse to deal with that they are threatened by a government they have lost control over and no higher authority or law will rescue us from our inaction.
