Let's talk about steroids
Real Sports on HBO has a story this month about steroids. But it's not the typical 'steroids are bad for you' story. The reporter, Armen Keteyian, discovered there are NO long term studies which support the allegation that steroids are unhealthy or that they kill. Keteyian reports that Lyle Alzado did not die of brain cancer caused by long term steroid use. He also interviews two long time steroid users; one is 70 years old and has been using steroids for 40 years with no ill effects. Keteyian emphasizes that steroids are harmful to kids and women, but for adult men, the harm is grossly exaggerated.

The Contrarian View
Virtually everybody from sportswriters and talk-show hosts to league executives and U.S. Congressmen has weighed in on the subject of steroid use. In a tell-all book that made headlines this spring, former baseball star Jose Canseco wrote about the positive effects of steroids in reasonable doses. Was he right? Armen Keteyian, who has been reporting on illegal substances in sports for the past five years, investigates the belief held by some scientists that steroids, when properly administered, cause no harm in adults.

There are more important things than this.

Like shark attacks.

2. But maybe the shark was on steroids.
Seriously, my first thought as a political junkie was the hearings Congress held this past winter. How not surprised I was to learn there are NO long term studies to support the contention that steroids are harmful. And how sad that this fact did not prevent our Congress from wasting its time on a non-issue.
