Dave Ross mentioned "Permament Bases" on CBS radio this AM.
No shit, FIRST time I've heard that phrase outside of "The Internets".

He said that the Resistance (I will NOT use the "Eye-word" to describe someone fighting for THEIR country) MIGHT want to sit down and talk with us, but they see these bases being built and figure we're lieing when we talk about straightening everything out, packing up, and going home...So, on with the War.

He also stated that the reason their temporary Constitution requires only a simple majority is that it's easier to pull only 51% of the strings. OK, not those exact words, but the meaning was there...

I told my girlfriend about what I had heard and asked her "Have you EVER heard anyone mention those 14 bases we're bulding over there?" "Only you, and that was when you were talking about something you saw on one of 'those' web sites you go to..."

1. Good catch, biggjawn....
Do they think these people are idiots??? The whole world understands what's going on...but as long as nearly half this country believes what a piece of sh** like Rove says, we're doomed.

2. Withdrawal of major ground forces from Iraq is certain perhaps six months
but we will leave permanent air bases in remote areas that are relatively secure from which we can project air power.

The problem is finding the right set of circumstances to allow withdrawal of major ground forces and let Rove/Bush declare victory. My guess is shortly after the constitution is written and a facade army is in place later this year.

The U.S. will definitely have several air bases around Iraq for the foreseeable future to provide close air support for Iraqi ground forces with U.S. forward air controllers attached to Iraqi forces and flying FAC missions with Iraqi crew members. In country air bases also act as a lever to dominate the Iraqi government, keep the ME destabilized, and protect Israel's interests.

5. Don't forget the pipelines
Aren't the bases close to the pipelines too? I remember reading about that earlier this year. I think this could be why so many republicans are coming out about Iraq now. They know Bush will be declaring "victory" soon (some staged event) and then the republican Senators coming out now will be seen as hero's and all that when the time comes.

(I am a leader) that provides books for individual members of the deployed military. On the site, along with specific requests by individuals, were more than 5 requests from people requesting any and all books and other materials to fill base libraries in Iraq and, I believe, Afghanistan. This told me something.

4. Of course there are bases there
You didn't really think we were going to leave, right? They started building them before we went in! (about a year or so)
