Did Wilson and his wife really pose for Vanity Fair?
I gotta admit, that sounds kinda weird to me.

The stupidest
non-scandal
of all time

In its lust to take down Karl Rove, the Washington press corps is protecting Joe Wilson by failing to tell the American people who he really is. So let me do it: Wilson is the Ward Churchill of the U.S. State Department.

Churchill is a sanctimonious fraud, claiming to be a Cherokee so that he can enrich himself and smear America. Wilson is a sanctimonious fraud, claiming to be a Karl Rove victim so that he can enrich himself and smear George Bush. (He went on to serve as an adviser to the Kerry campaign.)

Now, here is the one most important thing you need to know about Joe Wilson. First, he complained bitterly that Rove had jeopardized the life of his wife, Valerie Plame. Yet, six months later, this man posed with his wife for a full-color, two-page PHOTOGRAPH in Vanity Fair magazine.

since he knows Wilson so well.

In fact, Bowers should DEMAND Fitzgerald put him under oath TOMORROW so he can save the world from Wilson's lies.

Please. Michael Bowers...this country NEEDS you to testify about what you know UNDER OATH, so Wilson doesn't get away with all his lies.

Jeez, you wouldn't do a spread for Vanity Fair if they were asked? Besides it was all tongue in check and done so you couldn't really ID her. However, recently the Wilson's have released pictures of themselves so apparently Valerie is no longer trying to conceal her ID. Why bother after what Bu$h and Co did?

cover had been blown and her covert career was forever history.

After all, Valerie Wilson is Joe's wife and her neighbors and people at her church know what she looks like. The people at her kids' school know what she looks like. She accompanies Joe Wilson to dinners and parties, so people know what she looks like. Her face wasn't a secret, but her identity as a CIA agent was the secret.

She was a covert CIA agent for about 19 years and headed a front company for the CIA that was focused on controlling proliferation of WMD's. THAT was the secret.

121. takebackthewh, I think that you're getting attacked so much because...
you're a low-count poster (besides the fact that you're also bringing up a very sensitive subject). As a low-count poster, you're much more likely to be flamed if you start a post about a controversial subject. If you had more posts, you might still be flamed, but it would be flaming more on the fact that they disagree with you. As a low-count poster, many think that you're just trying to start trouble. (I'm not saying this -- I'm just trying to explain the dynamics a bit so that things will make a bit more sense.)

If you really are on our side, I hope that you'll have thick skin and stick around. We need all of the help that we can get!

registered users here and probably an uncounted number of surfers/lurkers.

I don't believe formality (whatever that means) is required. But poor grammar and spelling makes any post look like the poster hasn't put any effort into what he/she is saying. It is an indication that the person may be uneducated and hence the ideas stated are more likely to be suspect.

His "case"? His last name isn't Fitzgerald or Rove. He isn't investigating a federal crime, nor did he commit one, so there is no "case" on his part.

Why did the original poster come here to attack Wilson with Rove talking points, by the way? Really... strange.

She was a covert agent until Novak outed her.

"Yet, six months later, this man posed with his wife for a full-color, two-page PHOTOGRAPH in Vanity Fair magazine."

18. Depends what name she used.
If her "cover" identity was that she wasn't married to Joseph Wilson then it was a mistake. But as I understand it she didn't have a fake identity, she merely worked for a "front" company.

40. Here's my take on it.
I don't know about the original poster, but I can't say enough about how much I respect Wilson's courage in doing what he did. However, I personally feel that it wasn't really smart to do the Vanify Fair spread. Yes, the bastards already "outed" her. However, if people were truly in danger, why take a chance that someone would see it who didn't already know what she looked like. (i.e., further people might be compromised by someone seeing the picture.)

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't personally think that it was very smart. That being said, the neocons had already done the real damaage, and them doing this spread doesn't take away the fact that the neocons who "outed" her probably broke the law, and, at the very least, put personal gain/vindictiveness above their concern over our country's security.

(I'm truly not a troll; I just thought that I should present maybe another point of view from a supporter of Wilson. I wish that they hadn't done the spread. I know that they disguised her, but it doesn't look like much of a disguise to me.)

And when virtually no one was paying attention. The orig post was kinda lame but provocative, finally not well thought through. She was outed already, and the pictures were a good while after she was. She would not have left anyone (contacts) hanging before she allowed the piece to be done. The real damage was done by the outing and that could have entailed risk to her contacts--and may have!! How is it not smart to publicize the purely political outing of her and her work.

52. I can't speak for the poster, but the only problem that I have is with...
the photo. If this really was her, even disguised, it wasn't smart in my opinion.

The article itself was a really good idea.

Finally, the sh*t that we're taking now over the photo shows that it wasn't a smart thing to do. (I know that it's easy to have 20/20 hindsight, but I would have thought that it wasn't smart even when the article was published, had I seen it.) I wish that they hadn't allowed photos to be taken. It didn't make the true purpose of the article any more clear.

48. I trust the judgment of a trained CIA operative who's worked
under non-official cover (meaning she didn't have a fake passport and would not be acknowledged by the US government as an agent if captured) on whether posing in sunglasses and a scarf for a magazine spread AFTER her cover was blown increased the danger she was in, rather than some anonymous poster who has a proclivity for reading wingnut editorials.

It's not knowing who Valerie Plame is that put her in danger: It's knowing WHAT SHE WAS INVOLVED IN; which ChimpCo happily announced by publicizing the fact that she was a CIA agent, destroying Brewster Jennings & Co. and all the intelligence assets connected to it.

Wilson's wife looked like. She wasn't locked up. They socialized in public together as man and wife. Any diplomatic/intel folk worth anything could have/would have put the name to the face long before the Vanity Fair spread.

Based on the VF pic alone, I could pass her on the street and not notice who she was.

Any hoohah about the VF pic is just another red herring.

Maybe by this time he already knew the special prosecutor determined crimes were committed and was on to something much bigger. He and Val have a lot of style and he's kept this story alive while many tried to bury it. He is bringing attention to himself to keep it publicized and divert attention from the depth and breadth of the investigation.

The fact that she worked for the CIA is the issue.

That has already been revealed. Her having a picture taken in Vanity Fair, or anywhere else, doesn't matter. The cat is out of the bag.

Any agencies who read the Novak story (or whatever) were able to connect the name to a photo before Vanity Fair showed one, I'm pretty sure.

Her face, IMO, is not a big deal.

The deal is that she is a CIA agent.
You'll notice that the pic doesn't say "Valerie Plame, who works for Brewster Jennings, a CIA company, investigating weapons of mass destruction."

Am I to understand from those of you who find this "odd", that you expect her to never be photographed, even if she has already been outed and the damage done? I mean, her husband was an Ambassador--I'm sure she's had her photo snapped a few times before.

Obviously the Vanity Fair piece talks about her outing, but again, the picture itself is immaterial. Not to mention, she could have used disguises when she was on the job.

Haven't y'all ever seen Alias, LOL!

Are you saying that any underworld persons would never have known what she looked like until this site posted a pic of her? Or until VF posted a pic of her?

I guess I'm like some others in this thread, I don't understand what is so weird or odd about it. She isn't placing people in danger. She isn't outing herself.

In fact, by raising her profile she is keeping herself safe, IMO.

112. And no one in foreign intel/diplomatic circles would know what Joe
Wilson's wife looked like if it weren't for VF or pics taken aferwards?

Like she previously wore a burkha when she and her husband were out in public and socializing in DC? According to the VF article they met in 1997 at an event at the DC home of the Turkish Ambassador, to give an idea of the kind of social circles in which they traveled.

So do you really think the "bad guys" saw the pic in VF and then put out an APB for anyone who had dealings with a blond white woman wearing a scarf and sunglasses, since they would otherwise have no clue what Plame looked like just with her name, her front company "employment" and her marriage to Wilson?

To draw an analogy with Ward Churchill proves nothing, as analogies are odious.

Considering all the publicity that preceded it, I don't see why she wouldn't allow a photograph to appear in Vanity Fair in an article that was about her.

What I know about Ward Churchill is that he is radical and outspoken. I don't know enough to judge him. What I've seen about Joe Wilson makes anybody who gets compared to him an object of admiration. That is, Ward Churchill should be so lucky.

Joe Wilson is a sophisticated, erudite, honest, patriotic, resourceful American. Until somebody can prove different. And it's not going to be Karl Rove or this jerk Bowers.

100. Here is a little bit of the timeline
2001
The Italian government's intelligence agency obtains documents that appear to show that Iraqi officials attempted to buy yellowcake, a substance that can be enriched to produce weapons-grade uranium, from the African nation Niger. The evidence is shared with British and U.S. intelligence.

2002
February: The CIA, in response to concerns raised by Vice President Cheney's office, looks into British reports that Iraq tried to buy uranium from Africa. CIA officials dispatch ex-diplomat Joseph Wilson to Niger to investigate.

March: After an eight-day trip to Africa, Wilson reports to the CIA that he believes the allegations are "bogus." The agency sends a March 9 memo to the White House summarizing Wilson's findings.

Joseph Wilson's wife was "outed" out of revenge in response to the fact that he had the courage to speak the truth?

Some will think that the article was a good idea, some will think it is irrelevant, and others will think that it wasn't such a good idea (at least the picture part).

Regardless of what any of us thinks of the article, Joseph Wilson and his wife are guilty of nothing; Joseph Wilson is a hero; and his wife, her company & her colleagues are victims.

Bottom line: this is all that matters. This article doesn't take away the fact that the B* administration couldn't have cared less about national security when they outed Plame. Heads need to roll!
