BUY BLUE in a big way: car insurance.

I went by buyblue to check out a company yesterday and noticed that they have teamed up with Progressive Insurance and highly endorse them. That's a good chunk of change we could all be sending through blue business channels. Just thought I'd mention it... when it comes time to renew my policy I'll definitely be considering it.

2. The guy who owns progressive
is a major league liberal. I didn't like the rate they were charging here so I didn't go with them but if they get closer I will.

4. I've had their car ins. for 4 years now. No problems!
And for what it worth, my husband had an accident 1 1/2 years ago, and totaled our car! They were very fast in setteling the claim, seem to have paid us a fair price for the car, and I think our premium increased by $20 every 6 months.

I was really worried that because of the accident (which he was charged with!) that our premiums would increase into the stratosphere, but it didn't.

I also have to tell you, I switched from Allstate because they increased my renewal premium by $200+ for 6 months, and there were NO accidents, tickets or anything. When I asked why the big increase, I was told the premiums had been increased across the board due to higher corporate costs across the country. I checked around for quotes, and Progressive was the cheapest. It was even lower than my Allstate premium was before they wanted an increase.

I say go for it.

5. Was Progressive cheaper than GEICO?
I've had GEICO for 20 years and would love to support Progressive but, last time I check about 5 years ago, that were more expensive.

12. YES! By a couple of hundred $$.
Yea, I fell for the ads on TV and called GEICO too. They were actually higher than most of the others.

FYI, I get quotes EVERY time my insurance is due for renewal. Companies changes their rate structures all the time. I had State Farm for 30+ years, and I got a renewal with an increase of almost $400! I called and asked WHY, and was told it was because of the losses they sustained in Fl. from the hurricane (this was back in the early 90's). That was when I switched to Allstate. I've been checking several companies for a quote at renewal time ever since.

17. not to me it wasn't
I also tried and they wanted to charge me an extra one hundred dollars a month.

Sorry, I'm sticking with Geico. I also have the million dollar umbrella that only cost me 300 a year. I would love to try progressive but I have no idea why they wanted to charge me so much more then Geico.

19. For us it will be
I got a quote from them- <$900/yr for comprehensive, right now we're paying GEICO a little over $1000/yr for liability with a few extras.

That said we've been pretty happy with GEICO so I'm still not entirely sure we'll switch. We probably will.

excellent Customer Service setup.

About Geico....I had originally signed up with them, but after one month they canceled our policy because both of our cars are in both of our names. My partner and I, in order to protect each other, have EVERYTHING in both names. Apparently, Geico has a policy against that. Kind of looks like a back door discrimination against Gays to me.

But yes, Progressive is costing me more. Thanks for posting this. At least I have the satisfaction of knowing I am contributing to one of our own. Now, it is off to Costco for me....another blue company.

9. That shocks me
I was very positively impressed with Geico when they offered the option domestic partner (civil union) as a choice in regards to marriatal status. Might it have been due to one of you being a much higher risk driver than the other? I dropped Geico due to a huge increase when I moved to NC.

Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 01:14 PM by Straight Shooter
It's taken me a long time to get my budget on track and I was so proud of myself for paying it ahead of time. It wasn't due until August 10. (edit: I have Farmers, and they're great.)

This is good to know (Progressive Insurance) for the future, but in the meantime, it looks like I outsmarted myself x(

22. Even if you sent in your renewal
You can change over next month. Car insurance can be canceled at anytime as long as you have another insurer to pick up the liability. Don't wait. And your previous insurer will send you a refund check - prorated from the day you canceled your coverage.
I actually started Progressive, paid six months by credit card and then canceled my other policy.

13. i swtiched to progressive a couple of months ago
i'm very happy with them! the company i was previously using kept increasing the rate for no reason (well, the obvious reason - greed, because we had no tickets and no claims ever). i'm getting more coverage, i added a teen driver, and it is costing considerably less from progressive. i was quite thrilled! i didn't look any further, because the truth is i specfically checked them out because i wanted the money to go to a blue company.

plus - they have funny commercials!

and despite their Republican leanings, they're by far the best insurance company around in terms of rates and service . . . I'll support progressive companies when and where I can, but not here . . .

I changed over to Progressive six months ago.
And saved a big chunk of change.
And just got my renewal - every year you don't have a claim they DECREASE the deductible.
Got to be a bargain!
(added on edit)
And car insurance is tough to get here in Philly - too many uninsured drivers, plus we're close to New Jersey. (If I didn't have to cross the river to buy wine, I probably wouldn't go. New Jersey, Florida, Nevada, Utah, Kansas and Texas - Places that I never want to visit.

23. I had an awful experience with progressive...
my son was hit by a pick up truck driver....they were very slow to settle the claim. He was driving a vintage Jag he'd been restoring. I've spoken to others, and they may have a good reputation on the buyer end...just awful on the settlement end.

I've been with Geico for years now....never had any problems on either end.
