Al Jazeera: Japan may penalise US imports

Japan is considering imposing retaliatory duties worth about $76 million on US steel and other goods by September to counter subsidies paid by Washington to various companies.

The subsidies were being paid by the US under an anti-dumping programme ruled illegal by the World Trade Organisation.

Tokyo is considering duties on US steel and ball bearing products, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun business daily reported on Thursday.

Using a 15% levy as a starting point, varying rates will be applied to ball bearing and other product categories, it said.

With our "Clear Skies" and "Healthy Forest" programs making it voluntary for companies to stick to pollution standards, it is not fiscally beneficial for them to stick to them. Now, if they are penalized by SOMEBODY, they might have to change their tune.
