Question
http://www.dfl.org/

I don't think there is a Democratic Party in Minnesota but a "Democratic-Farmers-Labor Party"? Is this an alliance between the Dem and Labor parties or what? Could someone explain?

3. Farmer-Labor Party
The Farmer-Labor party was founded in the 1920s. It was a third party that had some success in electing a couple of governors and several senators. By the end of World War II, it was declining in membership and power and merged with the Democratic party of Minnesota in 1944.

There was another Farmer-Labor party founded in Chicago during the 1920s. That party was largely unsuccessful and faded away.

4. The Farmer-Labor part of the party has been explained
But basically it is the same thing as the Democratic party. They identify with the Democratic party. The DFL part of our party was formed when we joined with the Farmer-Labor party (which was at one point fairly prominent) and the name has just stuck with tradition. The agricultural community (at least the one where I live) supports the DFL overwhelmingly, because they are the party that fights for farmers.

The Repukes for a while used the title IR (I believe Gov. Carlson used this party title), and I think it stood for Independent Republicans, but I don't know why or when they started doing that.
