research request - Looking for a state by state budget report
I am looking for a statistical analysis of current state fiscal woes.

Essentially in a debate on the economy a conservative asked the following question. "Are the states that are in trouble democratic or republican controlled?"

Does anyone know where I can get a state by state report? I can do the remaining legwork. I am fairly certain the answer is both but I want proof to close the arguement.

Another point of arguement "is that goverment job-cuts are good for the economy because of all the fat in state agencies." Fortunately the statement itself and the assumption behind it are clearly fallacies and easily counterpointed.

1. Try the US Statistical Abstracts
I am not sure if they have that information, but they are quite comprehensive. If they do not contain the information, you might try one of their sources. Good luck

2. This link is informative. Link

I think there's a Conference of Governors site out there also with a state by state breakdown.

3. Try the website for National Conference of State Legislatures
and this link in particular:

http://www.ncsl.org/programs/fiscal/budissus.htm

Also, here is a report they just released:
http://www.ncsl.org/programs/press/2003/pr030723.htm

States Balance Budgets Without Broad Tax Hikes, New NCSL Report Shows

Not all of their stuff is free on the web but you can buy specific reports and download a lot of them.

Also, the National Association of State Budget Officers

go to http://www.nasbo.org

And get their report they did on state fiscal situations
http://www.nasbo.org/Publications/fiscalsurvey/fs-spring20030813.pdf

Finally, check out the state fiscal policies section of the Center of Budget and Policy Priorities website at
http://www.cbpp.org/pubs/sfp.htm
