It's a terrible tragedy, but I'm getting a little tired of hearing
it compared to the Boxing Day Tsunami (which killed an estimated 150,000 people) and Hiroshima which killed 66,000 the first day and thousands more in the ensuing days and years and which was caused by deliberate bombing and not a natural disaster.
but since most of us aren't living in or with the destruction the folks affected by Katrina are, let's try and look past the poor choice of comparisons.
