Yeltsin breaks his thigh
Associated Press in Rome
Thursday September 8, 2005
The Guardian

Former Russian president Boris Yeltsin, 74, was hospitalised yesterday after breaking a thigh bone at a Sardinian resort.
Emergency service workers arrived at a villa in Porto Rotondo, and took Mr Yeltsin to hospital, said Giuseppe Soro, director of ambulance dispatch in Sassari.

Mr Yeltsin's spokesman, Vladimir Shevchenko, told Russia's ITAR-Tass news agency the former president had broken a thigh bone in a bad fall. The Italian news agency Ansa said Mr Yeltsin fell at the villa around 6am.

Maria Serena Fenu, medical director of the San Giovanni di Dio hospital in Olbia, said Mr Yeltsin was treated there and then taken elsewhere.

A doctor in the hospital's orthopaedics department said an X-ray revealed a broken femur and Mr Yeltsin was taken to another hospital for surgery.

1. A broken femur? According to comedian Brian Regan, that's a "10"
on the pain scale.

2. Owwww
That has to hurt. An injury like that can be deadly for someone his age. I hope he's not hurting.

4. Fractured femur may not be all
A fall severe enough to fracture the femur, one of the sturdiest bones in the body, almost certainly caused other injuries. Unless it is actually a fracture of the very top of the femur, into the hip joint, which is more easily "breakable."

5. A friend's husband just broke that bone
And he is in his 40s. Took a tumble on a wet floor. 6 weeks of non- weight bearing- he had to have surgery- he is a cardiologist. He has gained a lot of empathy for pain, and most importantly for insurance hassles. He's getting better, but it was very painful and a slow recovery to regain the range of motion. And as I said, he is relatively young and not overweight or out of shape.

8. Very bad fracture for an older person.
He is not healthy due to his alcoholism. Hip and femur fractures are sometimes deadly.
