(WARNING: SAD PHOTOS) Please help pets affected by Hurricanes Katrina/Rita
Katrina pet rescue is still going on. Many pets are already dead -- they died horribly, of starvation and dehydration, or drowning. But rescuers are still working desperately because some animals are still being found alive, all skin and bones. Like this little beagle girl... last I heard, as of 3 days ago, she was still alive.

Caption with photo from http://www.pasadosafehaven.org/NEWS/NEWS.htm
"We still think about this little girl who we found. Weak. Unable to walk. She still managed to lick the face of the first rescuer who found her."

From bestfriends.org : Sept 22 - "Three weeks after the hurricane, we come across a sad old poodle, an incredible portrait of survival."

I don't work for any animal rescue organizations, just been volunteering via the internet with research and data entry for various people who need help. Many rescuers on the ground still desperately need donations, either money or supplies. There will also be long-term expenses like medical care and living expenses for animals placed in shelters. Heartworms are a major major problem with many rescues, and the medication for this awful disease is expensive. Please consider donating to these rescue groups, especially the smaller lesser-known groups that are doing heroic work there. Here are links to a few wonderful groups (there are many, I just happen to know more about these groups). Please browse these websites; you'll also learn a lot about what's really happening with animals in the Katrina Gulf coast areas.

If you'd like to help an animal shelter that's fostering and/or caring for Katrina animals in your state, or want to help rescue work with specific breeds, have a look at this list from the SPCA. (Also has some shelters that rescued horses.)

If you're interested in helping to reunite pets and people, there are several people working on that . I'm still trying to compile that info and will post it later. If you're interested in getting it directly, please send me a PM.

8. Me too, I warned you
The biggest heartbreak for me was the little guy, with the water truck in the background. Wish I could just reach and get him!

11. Me too...tears rolling down.
I can't STAND the thought of an animal suffering.
Of all the creatures on the planet, they are the only
ones who love unconditionally.
We could all take a lesson from our fur friends on how to love.

3. If people had been allowed to take their pets with them
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 11:43 PM by rocknation
they wouldn't be getting shot at now for the crime of developing a taste for humans by subsisting on the unrecovered bodies!

5. I donated to Noah's Wish.
And to AnimalHavenShelter.org, who have sent personnel into hurricane stricken areas to rescue pets and bring them to the no-kill shelter in upstate New York.

10. Don't Forget Alley Cat Allies

They're helping both pet cats and feral cats in the Gulf, and they're a kick-ass wonderful group.
