4. He could use some help fighting the attack
Following is a fundraising request from Jim. The court case stems from unauthorized whistle-blowing during the Clinton wars, when a taped phone conversation showing violations of the terms of an ethics settlement by Newt Gingritch was made public. Gingritch was forced to resign as a result. More at http://www.mcdermottforcongress.com/getthefacts.aspx

October 14, 2005

Dear xxxxxxxx,

I am counting on you to cover my back.
Three months ago, I wrote an e-mail asking for money to defend your right to know what your government is doing. Since then a torrent of breaking news: 1) Three indictments of DeLay, 2) Investigation of Bill Frist's stock sales by the SEC, 3) The arrest of the head purchasing agent of the U.S., Mr. Safavian, 4) Cheney's chief of staff being fingered by Judith Miller for releasing secret information, makes it increasingly clear why preservation of the First Amendment and my defense of it is crucial.

I just returned from Jordan where I talked to numerous prominent Iraqis who have fled Baghdad. I want to spend my time working on what I learned on this trip in pursuing a peace plan together with my Congressional colleagues.

The referendum on the Iraqi constitution will be voted on this Saturday, October 15th. Either way the U.S. loses because civil war will begin in earnest. We need to start withdrawing our troops by Christmas and concurrently call for an Arab controlled peace conference that can reach an Atwa (arrangement). Arabs have, for centuries, used this method of resolution and this idea was directly offered to me by the many Sunnis, Shia, and Kurds I talked to in Jordan.

So, there is a way to get out of Iraq. We have to do it by building a consensus and I would like to use my time in seriously pursuing this option.

However, my court hearing will start on the 15th of November. Therefore I have to take the time to raise money!

I am sending this appeal to 25,000 known Democrats. If each of you gave $10 and got just two of your friends to give $10, I could then concentrate on bringing our troops home instead of dialing for dollars. By supporting me at this crucial time you will send the message that the American people will not be denied their right to accurate information about the way their government works.

I need your help to cover my back so I can keep my focus where it should be.

Very sincerely,
McDermott Signature
Jim
P.S. See the movie "Constant Gardner."

3. Why are we building 16 permanent bases in Iraq if we want to get out?
The dems are going to do this weekly, Jim said.

Now it's Christopher Shays, R-CT for a defense. "gosh, McDermott has not been to Iraq since we started the war"
