15. And it will never happen. That would mean he has the ability to
think on his own. I think that is what happened with Miers. Given the choice of picking from a current list he had just assembled, he picked someone who fawns over him. I'm sure that he acted on his own in this pick and showed what a terrible leader he is. He will not do it again. Look for a very conservative woman with experience next for his pick. In other words, his staff will tell him who to pick.

29. If that happens
I don't see him not picking someone else. I think he probably did pick her on his own and that's why he's really fighting on her. He wants loyalty.

31. It's not the "conservative base" he should be anrgy with, it's the
neocons who pull their strings. That's really what this is all about. Enter Kristol and Krauthammer. It's the neocons who spoke out first against Miers and using their usual astute political savvy it wasn't difficult to make the American conservative base think they should be against Miers. The neocons want someone on the bench who will be able to handle in the terra war issues that will be coming forward from a very unhappy voting public and the international arena. I believe this is the stealth reason behind the outcry against Miers. Just look at who yelled first and loudest.

25. I think that the reaction from his base was a real shocker for him.
He's used to the kool-aid drinking crowd just rubber stamping anything he wants and they turned on him. So the question now is, will he give them what they want in an effort to get back in their good graces or will he come up with someone they don't want just to punish them for their defection.

28. That's the question
Do they force Bush to stay on their party line, or do they have their own coup d'etat?

32. He is a very vindictive person. He may give them someone they
don't want for paybacks for their defection. Some of the freeper types took this nomination really hard and were very vocal about their opposition. He doesn't like it when things don't go his way.

21. If Gonzales is named on any litigation re: torture, then
can he be considered? It would seem to me to be a conflict of interest. I'm sure there must be some litigation somewhere on this issue.

16. Somehow, I don't think that will be a problem.
I think the cons expect the dems to make this whole process difficult, and the fact that they requested privileged documents was no surprise to anyone.

I am so glad that Chimpy is going to have a toddler-style temper tantrum over this. It should be quite fun to watch.

20. Miss Miers was originally nominated in a fit of pique
So if Chimpy's pissed, it means he'll re-double his efforts to show that Michael Brown wasn't the worst cronyist appointment he could have made. I still think that was the guiding emotion for his selection of Miss Miers.

I'm mystified, though, how he settled on Bernanke to be the Federal Reserve Chairman; seems to be a pick that a lot of folks are comfortable with, and the man has an actual track record of professionalism as an economist and banker. Perhaps he remembered to ask for help with the pick, because I don't think he consulted with anyone about Miss Miers.

the Boy King? He is always so reliable to bend over and spew the Bush party line! Remember, King is responsiblefor the Clinton "Hair Cut on Air Force One/Thousands Inconvenienced" story that to my knowledge he has never apologized for. I have a long memory, obviously.

40. Well, now, THIS is interesting.
I maintain it was a smart -- potentially Fitzmas-killing -- move of Bush, to dump Meiers.

Clearly Rove may just have saved his job -- even if he quietly resigns the attention is off him, much like Tenet and Ashcroft, meaning he can still retain sway.

The question is if Dems can use Fitzmas to pry Karl Rove from Bush's neck. I don't think they're smart enough (in Congress) to realize the narrow window of opportunity they have here.

If Rove remains joined to Bush at the hip, he will use his puppet Bush to destroy Fitzmas.

All he has to do is nominate someone that will unify the conservative base and draw the Dems out into a pitched battle.

Rove can afford to sacrifice a nominee to get Borked. With Fitzgerald out of the news (remember the Iran Contra investigation?) he can keephis influence, and keep plugging away for three years. That's how they got Scalia.

Now, if Rove is discredited by events in the very near future, a White House in disarray might allow a vindictive and stupid Bush to push thru say, Gonzales.

But even then, what have Dems gained? Unlike Meiers, nobody on the right would imagine that dems secretly supported Gonzales. So no political judo allowed - or needed. He would quickly be defeated and a Scalia clone thrown up in his place by a chastened Bush -- and quickly confirmed by an exhausted Senate. Just like Scalia himself in the wake of Bork and that other guy.
