Newsview: Withdrawal Shows Bush's Weakness
Newsview: Withdrawal Shows Bush's Weakness

By TOM RAUM

WASHINGTON -- Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers' sudden withdrawal underscores the strength of the social conservatives who form President Bush's political base and the weakness of a president buffeted by one political misfortune after another.

Her withdrawal came after restive conservatives mounted a stinging campaign against her credentials.

Heading into what may be the darkest days of his presidency, the withdrawal provides Bush an opportunity to regain the support of that rebellious bloc and avoid drifting earlier than usual into the lame duck status that eventually claims all second-term U.S. presidents.

5. Even badly wounded, he's still the most powerful man in the world
He OWNS the senate and the house, he has armies at his disposal and can make war on a whim, and-by the time he's through, the federal bench will be thoroughly stacked with rightwing nutcases.

I'm glad he's hurting, but write him off at your own risk. Wounded and cornered animals are often the most dangerous.

7. I'm not "writing him off" but
from after they couldn't prevent 9/11 in the most national defense failure in history..and his ratings went to 90%..it feels good to see him burning on the spit a wee bit.

However, I know when a rat is cornered they are dangerous and no doubt they will come up with some shite to curl our toes.

I will miss seeing the republicans at each others throats, though. Reading Free Republic has been a real blast since the Miers nomination. Instead of the usual cheerleading squad, they've been having each other for lunch!

Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. Now on to Fitzmas Day!
