Does * have a "base" anymore?

Aides say Bush has nothing further to say on Miers withdrawal

MIAMI His spokesman says President Bush still thinks Harriet Miers would make a great Supreme Court justice.

Press Secretary Scott McClellan told reporters as the president flew to Miami to see Wilma's damage that Bush is disappointed in the process that led to Miers withdrawing.

He says the White House didn't pay much attention to conservative attacks on the nomination. But he says what sunk Miers was the insistence of some senators for access to documents from her time as White House counsel.

McClellan says those are papers that no president could turn over.

7. I'd say he has a base. Just look at the polls.
The most generous of polls (Fox) gives Bush a solid 41% Approval Rating.

There's his base. 41% of the population, generally speaking. The haves, the have mores, and the just plain faithful.

He has no choice now but to play and politic directly to the 41% of Americans remaining who have faith in him.

41% doesn't win you elections, even midterms, by the way. Or votes of confidence. Or praises from the media as a "popular President."

I think it finally happened. I think he's toast.
