Prediction time: the next nominee for the Supreme Court will be:
Maura Corrigan, Justice on Michigan Supreme Court.

(No, I don't have any inside info, but since I was, I believe, the first person to predict Miers nomination, I figure the worst that can happen is that I'll be batting .500).

If Miers was the "most qualified" on the short list, we go downhill from there.

24. You're absolutely right....
"Little Scalia" is who I'm expecting, and he's my worst nightmare. He's so bad he actually suceeds in making Miers look like a decent choice.

*I'm kind of hoping for Edith Clement or Michael McConnell. I think it's the best two options we're going to get unless Bush seriously loses his mind and nominates a moderate. Maybe Harry Reid can give him another suggestion? Neither is good, but at a minimum I don't think either is the sort to put prejudice or opinion before the actual law, unlike Owen or Alito. Clement isn't *as far* to the right as others and McConnell cares too much about his rep as an academic and Con. Law scholar in terms of legacy to rubber-stamp a R. RW agenda.

*I wouldn't be surprised to see him pull someone out of thin-air, a dark-horse candidate like Harvard Con. Law prof. Mary-Ann Glendon. She scares me, is to the right of even Owen, views moral law (in a catholic sense) supreme over "human" law. Has written that a legitimate function of the courts is to impose morality. (Her view of morality is "to hold against that which is universally in the human condition known as wrong." i.e. divorce, abortion, death penalty, stem cell research, corporatism over individuals, war, communism, fundamentalism). She'd be a crisis candidate for the far-right though as she basically supports everything they believe in but is an anti-fundamentalist very close with the Vatican.

40. If he goes with a white male -- Sen. John Cornyn
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 04:19 PM by onenote
I don't think this will happen, but it could. The guy is from Texas. He's on the Judiciary Committee and Senators don't eat their own (see, e.g., John Ashcroft). And he has a resume that's just about as strong as some of the other prominently mentioned names:
Texas Attorney General from 1999-2002; District Court Judge in San Antonio for six years; Texas Supreme Court Justice for seven years.

Watch out for this twist....

Which probably earned him big points with chimpy. PLus it allows him to stick it to the right wing that beat him up. They can't/won't go after Cornyn, but because he backed Miers, it doesn't look like Chimpy just caved in to their demands completely.
