A friend of mine went crazy. Joined the Army Reserves at 39
Has a wife and two daughters, aged 2 and 4 at home.

I picked up the St. Pete Times today, and there was an article about him in the State and Metro Section (Nothing in online edition). Seems after he told his boss he joined the Army Reserves, he got fired. He's a Systems Administrator for a Tampa cardiac clinic.

I haven't talked to him in about a month, and I guess he left for boot camp today. Crazy!

2. As much as I think him signing up was a foolish move,
is his job not protected as a servicemember?

11. I think it is, by federal law, up to a max of one year. they have to
save him a space. They don't have to give him his old job back, but they have to give him a job at the same pay. Real HR types, correct me if I'm wrong.

3. Which part is crazy?
The part about him joining up...... or the part about him getting FIRED for doing so???

Holy crap. The guy joined the Reserves, and got fired for it. Isn't there a law against that?

7. The Soldiers and Sailors Act
expressly forbids the firing of an employee for serving in the military.

8. From what I've been reading
Employers have been violating that act with impunity for 3 years.

10. I Seem To Remember Reading That...
there are so many complaints that the agency responsible for disposing of them cannot keep up. That was like 1 1/2 years ago.

4. Fired him for joining the Reserves? That's what's really crazy.
I'm not sure what your friend's motivations are, but I don't think he deserved to get fired for signing up with the Reserves. Maybe there is more to the story. Now he has a family and no job. :(

9. He ran for Supervisor of Elections in our county last year
And I advised him on his campaign. I just talked to him at a DFA meeting about a month ago, and everything seemed fine.

But to enlist with a wife and 2 young daughters, during this war, is crazy. I hope everything goes well for him. He left for 10 weeks of boot camp today.

6. Whoa! His boss will get in trouble with Rummy for that
Besides that, what a sad thing, to go off to such an ill-conceived war and leave toddlers at home.
