I'm hoping these guys are for real because I think * is going to come out swinging.

1. Frankly I hope they don't

If he puts up someone who's WAY RIGHT WING (and just watch -- that's what's coming), I hope Joe-Mentum and the other Dems have the GUTS to walk away and let FristCo try their "nukular option."

I think the country is awakening to the idea of "checks and balances" and won't be as quick to write off the filibuster as a tool for the minority.

3. You have a good point.
I don't know. I guess I'm just feeling sick of being anxious all the time.

2. Nope
I don't think they will. I think Bush will 100% nominate somebody that pisses us all off (that's a given even if he nominates a moderate), but he will nominate someone moderate enough to give McCain and others cover, while ideological enough to please his base.

4. Might not need them
The Repubs are in a panic, now, so they could cock up the next nomination as well.

5. They Will NOT Hold for a Bork, Brown, or Owen
That type of nomination would break the deal and lead to a filibuster.

Bush's best bet is to find another Roberts. If one exists.

6. It will not hold if the Democrats object to the nominee.
The deal was a suckers bargain. The Democrats got rolled. The Repugs will support any verifiable right wing nominee. They'll claim the Democrats concerns aren't legitimate and off we go.

I hope the Democrats don't back down and fight to the bitter end if Bush nominates a whackjob rightard. Bush is weak and we can hurt him and the Repugs a lot by fighting for what we believe in. Force them to use their "nuclear" option. Then after 2006 we can run the Congress.

7. The Gang of 14 was a fools bargain.

It was a skillful plan by the Repukes to get all of the right wing zealot judges approved without using the unpopular "nukular option". The Dem's received nothing from it, not even the guarantee of the preserving of the filibuster.

8. No, Bush will nominate someone from the far right and all 55 Rethug
senators will rally round him. Democrats will filibuster, Republicans will go nuclear and the filibuster will become history.

We get another Scalia on the bench, Bush gets a victory and his base emerges reunited and energized.
