Wrongful death suit may be nearing end

City, activist's family eyeing settlement

The mother of civil rights activist Ben Brown has waited almost 40 years for an apology from Jackson police or the Mississippi Highway Patrol for the slaying of her son.

Ollie Mae Brown waited while Jackson police and the FBI failed to fully investigate her son's death in a 1967 riot on Lynch Street, then as police reopened the case decades later and a Hinds County grand jury found that city and state officers were possibly to blame.

On Tuesday, her wait could end if the Jackson City Council decides to settle a $20 million wrongful death lawsuit with her and her daughter-in-law, Margaret Brown of Natchez. City officials and Browns' attorney will not reveal the settlement offer.

"It's been so long," said Ollie Mae Brown, 91. "It didn't seem to me like they weren't ever going to do it."
