Do you think the RW might have done better with Miers than Alito?
Edited on Sat Nov-05-05 02:58 PM by patrice
H. Reid was actually trying to help them out with that suggestion. She would have done whatever for the "Church". Alito, because of his status, is accountable within a broader political context.

SOME of The RW pitched a fit and lost a more sure thing in Meirs, I think. Way to go; cut your nose off to spite my/our face! :applause:

1. Thisis the sort of behavior I like to see the Republican party
engaging in!

Crumble, you stupid fascist monolith, desolve like a statue made of sugar in a monsoon.

2. No. I think the RWers won with Alito. The entire balance of the court ...
... may well go conservative. There is no way to know now, certainly, but I think the conservatives won.

5. I'm not saying that we shouldn't FIGHT Alito with Everything we've got.
There are so many questions on issues of National Security and the potential for War-Forever with the Cheney/Bush Cabal. I think we've already achieved those "Extra-Ordinary Circumstances" that the gange of 14 said are the criteria for whether to Fillibuster or not.

We ARE IN Extra-Ordinary circumstances: All Social/Political and Economic Issues are on the Table!! There should be a Fillibuster if necessary. There are many investigations going on. Alito should answer many questions.

3. I don't know. I don't think anyone will really know until
we see actual votes on real cases. I've seen quite a few shockers from the justices that have been there a long time.

I would never have thought the lefties on the court would have voted to expand the eminent domain laws to include business interests!

I also was very surprised that the majority voted to end the counting in Fl. in 2000. I really expected them to insist that the entire state of Fl votes be recounted and let the chips fall where they may.

I think Harriet could have been easily influenced by the other justices on the court. Who would have had the biggest impact? Probably would have depended on the case. I think it's very possible that Ginsberg could have won her over on women's issues.

Alito seems to be more intelligent, but who knows if that means thinking for himself, or being easily influenced by Scalia?

4. I've Been Wondering That Myself
The right wing might have had a stealth vote against Roe v Wade in Miers. Now they pretty much have an openly constructionist judge who might well start a battle royale in the Senate.

I for one do not believe the filibuster is dead. If athe Republicans try to change the rules, the Democrats can filibuster the rule change. If four of the gang of fourteen break away over Alito, the filbuster may hold and Alito might become another Bork.

6. I don't think it should be a foregon conclusion, but also NOT out of the
question. We are at a crucial point in our history (again).
