Can anyone tell me about San Antonio, Tx? I am thinking of moving there
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 08:57 PM by BigBearJohn
Changed my mind. My neighbor said try San Antonio.
Is it hot and humid too? Democrat or Republican?

(on edit, changed question to "San Antonio" instead of Corpus Christi)

1. 1. It's in Texas
2. Big Spring Break place for Aggies.
3. Named after Jeebus.

So what's the deal? I know things are kind of pricey and all out here, but is there some job offer you can't refuse in TX?

It just wasn't for me. Not sure why my opinion about that pisses you off, though.

13. How is this Texas bashing?
Or is there history that I'm unaware of?

22. thank you
if I lived somewhere for many years and didn't like it, why is it "bashing" to say so?

Kind of like when Freepers get on the "Bu$h-Bashing" rant.

FYI re history: I've never gotten into arguments on DU about the relative merits, or lack thereof, of Texas. So I don't know what these guys are all upset about, unless of course they have a problem with someone speaking from many years of experience about a state that is, let's face it, not exactly a progressive Mecca.

You might get more responses there.

3. Hi, BBJ! I lived in Corpus for 6 years in the 80s.
Do you like heat, because it gets wicked hot and humid. There's lots of beaches, but depending on gulf currents, they can be littered with tar from the oil rigs, trash, etc.
We went there to avoid Hurricane Rita and it's growing like crazy!
If I could choose between CC and Houston, CC it would be.
Do you have any specific questions? I still have friends there and could ask tomorrow for you.
Also, you will probably get a decent response if you post this in the TX forum.
Good luck!

24. really hot, really humid,
big military town, lots of kitschy tourism.

The last time I was there I got caught in horrendous flooding.

The Tex-Mex food is great, though, and you're relatively close to Austin.

4. My aunt lived there for 50 years...I visited many times.
Lots of Mexicans (which doesn't matter at all to her or to me)
Great beaches
Hot & humid
Affordable local seafood, veggies & citrus
Hot & humid
Reasonable cost of living in general (except right on the great beaches)
Hot & humid
You can get a maid cheap
Hot & humid

That's all I can remember. :D

19. It's a tourist city, really
The entire downtown is set up for tourism, particularly around the convention center/riverwalk. Cool to visit for sure (I got good and drunk there every night of a convention I was attending), but I don't think I'd want to live there. Then again, because I was committed to being a tourist for both visits, I'm also not sure I saw much of the town outside the tourist areas. I'm sensitive to this as a new yorker. People who only really see midtown when they visit don't get the sense of New york in the least.

I currently live in Orlando! Unbelievably to most, there is a whole city, which has a lot of good characteristics, north of and separate from Disney, Universal, and I-drive.

21. I love love love San Antonio.
What a great city. Lots of culture, not a wide ethnic diversity but at least it isn't Caucasian up to your eyeballs. Wonderful Mexicans there to balance out the white bread monotony.

I only visited for vacation, but San Antonio has an ambience, an atmosphere all to itself. Even if you don't move there, definitely plan a visit. You won't be sorry.

Oh. Be sure to take your sweetie with you along the River Walk. There is nothing like it in the world.

Of course, Whidbey Island is nothing to sneer at, either. :)

25. Love it! I lived there for 15 years
up 'til 2000. I'd still live there if I could.

Yeah, it can be hot and humid. Yeah, downtown is touristy. Yes, there is a lot of military. I see more reservists daily here in Southern Minnesota than I saw when I lived on the North side of SA.

However, there is also a lot of really cool stuff for the residents, much culture and mix of cultures. Some great art, a decent music scene, albeit small. Big enough to get touring acts of all types, good art museums, fairly liberal politics.

Lots of nice restaurants in all price ranges. Lots of fun stuff to look at (i.e; architecture), a variety of topography. Good sections of town, bad sections, strip malls, quaint/indie shops. The Spurs. It is NOT Dallas.

Its a big friggin' city, it has something for everyone, too much of some things for some, too little for others. Visit before you leap.

26. Have lived here for the past 12 years. It is hot and humid for about
six mos, spring is great. I like it here. I have lived in Corpus and Galveston, I prefer San Antonio. The river walk is a nice place to spend the day. I live on the north side of town. My neighborhood consists of older homes, 25 years old , not tract homes, is well kept up and not very political. Didn't see many yard sign for either Kerry or bush**. Easy to navigate around the city. It's close to Austin and the Hill Country. Lake Travis and Canyon Lake offer great recreational opportunities. Close to the coast. We are home to the Spurs. :-) Lots of trees. Housing is affordable.

30. TX Is the Once and Future Blue/Dem
The only reason it's Red now is that they have a pResident calling it home. Everybody knows he's from Connecticutt.

But Dallas elected a Dem female as shrefiff, and Austin/San Antonio/and all-of-South TX is BLUE.

If you have a trade, a BUSINESS to start, you will make out like crazy.

As for the heat, yeah, but no earthquakes.

31. Honey it's Texas...HOT & HUMID are a given. I am in Houston
it's November and it's 88 degrees; good thing there is no such thing as global warming.

It used to cool off in Sept. or Oct. and stay mild until Feb. or March but not the last few years. We have had basically no winter. I mean in Houston we never have had "seasons" per se but it used to be cooler.

Summer time is MISERABLE...HOT & HUMID.

32. I used to live north of San Antonio.
I found it more liberal than other parts of Texas. It has a large Hispanic population so they have lent a lot of Spanish traditions to the city like the posadas at Christmas. I liked it. There was a lot to do there. I especially enjoyed the botanical gardens. They also have an opera, unusual in smaller cities like that.

You should pay a visit first. I found the natives to be friendly and helpful.

33. well...........
...America's greatest traditional jazz band plays in San Antonio at the Hyatt on Riverwalk -- Jim Cullum's Jazz Band.

And there's a tour bus around town with a huge sombrero on top -- Pepto Bismol pink -- and it plays mariachi tunes on a loudspeaker.

Oh, and it's hellish hot.
