Question?? Just Watched Movie "Amistad" & Want To Research Info...
The movie with Morgan Freeman, Matthew McConouhy (sp), Anthony Hopkins and other superb actors left me crying like a baby!

I'm sure Steven Spielberg "enhanced" the story but it was soooooo powerful! John Quincey Adams before the Supreme Court argued for the slaves of Sierra Leone and won! This was in 1839, Martin Van Buren ruled lower courts not valid (executive branch) mainly because he feared the Civil War and didn't want to lose his upcoming election! My what a concept!!!

What an EDUCATION in true Democracy... what OUR Founding Fathers created, and what seems to be sooooo lost these days as we are RULED by this WH!!!

I presume the movie which was from 1997 caught the eye of someone and they deemed it IMPORTANT to air!!

Not a student of history and had not remembered it from school, I'm curious about the facts behind the movie. I Googled and found nothing.

4. The movie is actually factual.
I teach world civ...I teach this story, as well as others about successful slave rebellions on slave ships.

6. It Sure Was Powerful!!
Just tore at my heart in a HUGE way! And you say it's factual so I recommend others try to check it out!

I had to shut my eyes while they were showing the scenes of the travel on the ship, it was horrific! I do know a lot about how slaves were brought here and the terrible conditions, but the whole story was totally enthralling!

8. The sharks actually changed their feeding routes
to follow the slave ships. When the slaves got tossed overboard because of patrols, etc, the sharks were there.

There are still many right wing sites who say the "negroes" should be thankful that we whites rescued them from Africa.

I bought the soundtrack from the movie. It was fantastic.

17. Tin Foil hat time
I have heard that the Bermuda Triangle is a cursed area because of bodies being dumped over in that area during the slave trade.

Don't know if anyone else has ever heard that legend.

they have to get some cute white boy to be the link into to the story. I just couldn't go there. I'm sure Spielberg meant to do a great job. I'm just not into it - though I like much of what he has done.

14. It Might Surprise You That One Of The Most Poignant Scenes In
the movie was after Adams argued before the Supreme Court, Cinque wanted to know WHAT Adams said told them.

He answered, I used "your words!" I agree that many of these type of depictions center around "white" characters, but I didn't see that in this movie. I was very very moved, that's WHY I wanted to find out "more" on the subject.

I'm not a youngster, but a Boomer so learning something new is always a plus to me.

I say more often than not, I get up every day thinking I have something NEW to learn each day!
