1. Given the hours,
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 01:32 AM by GrpCaptMandrake
it's probably an engineering problem with the automation, or a newbie dialing in the wrong satellite channel.

That, or Clear Channel's a gang of remorseless fascist thugs.

On edit: After all, it IS Clear Channel.

5. I've never heard anything like that station.
Dead air and overlapping audio. Even college stations are 1,000% better.

7. That's a station operating
on the cheap, with a screwed up automation system and minimal human employment. Has all the earmarks.

8. But don't they owe something at least to their advertisers?
Like running the ads they paid for?

11. The real bulk of AM advertising
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 01:58 AM by GrpCaptMandrake
is dawn to dusk, unless it's a 50,000 watt blowtorch. Everybody else has to power down, and ad revenues past 7 p.m. are generally almost negligible.

Also, if you pay attention to talk radio advertising, you'll hear a lot of ads that feature an "800" number. When you hear "please call ..." you're hearing a "per inquiry" ad. That means the station doesn't get paid per spot, but rather gets paid a percentage of monies made when people call and order the product in question.

Think about wingut radio: Phlush, Hannity, the Savage Weiner are almost all "per inquiry" ads.

That's because most of the time when a "straight" advertiser buys in, they promptly find out that about half their potential market refuses to do business with them b/c they're advertising with a fascist.

The freepers are even better at the tactic. That's why liberal commercial talkradio has proven so difficult to maintain over time.

12. Lots of 800 numbers in the ads.
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 02:11 AM by nicknameless
But a lot of them are for services and products. Wendy-the-whiner, "Skin Zinc" etc. Obnoxious ads. Some may be PSAs.

Right-wing radio shows, like right-wing books, are well-funded because there are great profits to be had in misinforming the pinheads who listen to and read that hooey.

13. It's the P.T. Barnum
approach to radio. The right has targeted its audience, and knows they're wackos, at least according to a former DeLay and Abramoff associate.

We're talking about the same people who believe that Avocor will grow back their hair AND their self-respect, that someday they, too, will buy gold, that they can cure their near-sightedness without glasses, herbal remedies will do what a personality and viagra won't and that if the astronauts slept on it, it must be good.

Right wing talk is literally predicated on the ambitions and prejudices of fools.

15. And so under-reported! n/t
But then again, in some spirit of fairness, they just gave voice to what we've known for years. What else do you say about somebody who believes that "on the third day Gawd created the Remington bolt-action rifle, so Adam could hunt the dinosaurs and the homersectionals?!"

Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 01:58 AM by nicknameless
What do you mean by "it is what it is"?

If you understand what might be going on, could you please clue me in?

(I looked up "Qrque" on Wikipedia, Google and OneLook. Can't find any information on that term.)

4. could it be that they only have a daytime license?
That is the case in Chicago. And with days getting shorter, that means less AAR.
