Abramoff asked $9 million from Gabon for meeting with Bush

http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Abramoff_inquiry_broadens_1109.html

The lobbyist Jack Abramoff asked for $9 million in 2003 from the president of a small West African nation to arrange a meeting with President Bush and directed his fees to a Maryland company now under federal scrutiny, according to newly disclosed documents.

The African leader, President Omar Bongo of Gabon, met with Bush in the Oval Office on May 26, 2004, 10 months after Abramoff made the offer. There has been no evidence in the public record that the lobbyist had any role in organizing the meeting or that he received any money or had a signed contract with Gabon.

4. Rush Limbaugh didn't even have to pay to sleep in the Lincoln Bedroom
He said, in effect, that Bush did it "just because" . . .

Somehow, the idea that a 3 hour, 5 day a week rant against Democrats would give you the impression that $100K would have been a bargain compared to all the "free advertising" that Repukes got from Rush . . .

(Not an attack on you . . . just an opportunity to remind people of the lengths the Repukes will take)

3. Bam! It's not a Raw Story story, it's a NYT story.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 - The lobbyist Jack Abramoff asked for $9 million in 2003 from the president of a West African nation to arrange a meeting with President Bush and directed his fees to a Maryland company now under federal scrutiny, according to newly disclosed documents.

The African leader, President Omar Bongo of Gabon, met with President Bush in the Oval Office on May 26, 2004, 10 months after Mr. Abramoff made the offer. There has been no evidence in the public record that Mr. Abramoff had any role in organizing the meeting or that he received any money or had a signed contract with Gabon.

White House and State Department officials described Mr. Bush's meeting with President Bongo, whose government is regularly accused by the United States of human rights abuses, as routine. The officials said they knew of no involvement by Mr. Abramoff in the arrangements. Officials at Gabon's embassy in Washington did not respond to written questions.

"This went through normal staffing channels," said Trent Duffy, a White House spokesman, who said the meeting was "part of the president's outreach to the continent of Africa."

5. I figured people would figure that RS sourced the NYT when they
went to the link, but I guess I should have put the NYT as the source.

7. Just wondering
Does RS give people goodies when they post the wrong link, like tote bags or coolers, maybe offer them a chance to write a story for their site?

Not attacking you or anyone but I see so many people linking RS when there's a perfectly fine link that Already EXISTS so I just have to wonder when so many, like on one day when there were about SIX posts all leading to RS on the Same Subject..

I mean I couldn't believe that my wife was reading a thread to me, "RAW STORY had learned" or "has Revealed" that Powell chucked about a third of his UN Faked WMD speech.. news that may be as old as a few years, something I've certainly saw in the last few months on a CNN Special where his aid talked about it, and am fairly sure I heard someone mention it the other day on TV..

I plain couldn't believe it.

I thought there was a basic rule (and I thank you for your honesty) that we are to post the ACTUAL LINK to any story, or has that changed?

8. I think posting the actual link is common sense, in my haste to bring this
story to here I fumbled. As far as a "rule" I am not sure, but I think it is like an unwritten rule for curtisity. My homepage is linked to http://www.solarbus.org/realnews/ and if you go there you will see how I arrived at RS's page. Either way this makes for a very interesting piece of the "Culture of Corruption"

10. Thank you for your honesty
but I think that our Common Sense rule is being abused by some here, and I think it will lead to less readership if they keep it up.

It's just so freaking commercial that it sucks the humanity that I so love right out of the board when they do that..

thanks

6. Interesting read except they mention Billy Carter and Hillary Clinton's
brother as also being "registered lobbyists" for other countries.

Unbelievable they can't write a story at WaPo or NYT's without bring up "Clinton Did it!"

Still Abramoff sounds like he was just raking it in left and right in his empire.

9. "There has been no evidence in the public record"
Note the word "public". So, are WH call sheets public record? What about Karl's emails?

Subpoena time!
