Do you worry that the division may deteriorate into a disaster .....?
...or a civil war? Do you worry that you may say something or do something that may send our country over the edge even further? Are you concerned that the Democrats and Republicans have created a chasm that might be too wide to cross?

3. No, because the GOP is fracturing before our eyes
and the Democrats are becoming more unified. I suspect there will be a period of pragmatic politics, and we will see more 'gang of 14' coalitions when ideologues go too far off the mark.

8. not at all
at the end of the day, a civil war would just get in the way of getting the kids to soccer practice.

Most people don't know or don't care enough about the topics that we do to think about dying fighting for them, and that's probably a good thing. I'm not at all comfortable with the idea of "civil war" either - in this day and age it would turn into a horrorfest beyond our ability to comprehend.

What gets to the middle is not the odd far off idea of "civil war" -- it's the horror of possibly being inconvenienced in their daily activities.

So, break out the duct tape and saran wrap, threaten to randomly search vehicles and disappear political dissidents: most people just yawn and could care less about giving away other people's freedoms -

But threaten to take away their gas guzzler or the gas to put in it, and you will have riots. Enforce carpooling or strongly encourage use of public transportation, and you will have riots.

Put tens or hundreds of thousands of people on no-fly lists or make them surrender their passports, and you will definitely have some public safety issues.

9. Who promotes the split? Is it inconceivable that a corporate elite
needs to re-energize a radical left? They can only rule when there is fear and hatred.

I think the power brokers use the left and the right to divide, distract and maneuver. But how do you defeat them and hold the center? Try to maintain a centrist position on any message board and see if you can. Their strategy is simple and has been effective for more than 300 years in my opinion.

10. Are you worried that the illusory unity perpetrated for 5 years ...
was already leading this country into multiple disasters?

Are you concerned that the former Democrat reluctance to speak out against the crimes of the GOP was contributing to neocon burning of bridges to that we could not recross into sanity?
