I think I'm going to start a "Save the Pretty White Girl" foundation
Start a whole fund to save pretty white girls, since the news is obsessed with them. Point out how they are quick to become an endangered species, and how evil predators hunt them down all over the place.

I think I could separate a lot of rich people from their $$ over this

2. Wasn't there a Daily Show correspondent
who wanted to start a foundation for the "girls gone wild" women? You might want to hook up with him. At the very least you're going after the demographic.

Though perhaps there is some thought of some kind of hook-ups...

I think girls in this country and other countries are often in peril. Unlike you, I make no distinction based on race. I listened to MLK.

18. Ahhh but if you watch the news, you would think it is only white girls
That are in danger, and hence my point. When a hispanic or African American girl goes missing, it barely makes the local news.

When a pretty white girl goes missing (Laci Peterson, Natalee Holloway, that girl who just turned up in Brazil) the news is all over it. Reminds me of Birth of a Nation, when the real fear of the KKK is underscored - after all the Carpetbaggers move in and do their stuff, the most heinous of all crimes occurs and a BLACK MAN touches a WHITE WOMAN.

This is, IMHO, one of the greatest fears of the racist.

And girls in this country are in no greater danger than men in this country are. Did you know most victims of violence are men? Did you know that most victims crime are men?

Citing MLK is a straw man btw...

22. I don't wallow in TV news, but I understand the issue as you
describe it in this post. I don't choose to practice the same discrimination that you condemn, whether it be sarcasm or not. I don't discriminate against all members of a certain race, just because someone of another race is also being discriminated against. And, MLK, strawman or not, said the same.

And pretend that Natalee Holloway is a legit story, where all the others aren't...or that the reporters just missed those stories...but that would be BS and you know it.

And I don't see how I was "kicking" a poor little defenseless girl by merely making a satirical point - but hey, some people get offended when I chose Pepsi over Coke so what can I do?

I got slaughtered right here on DU for doing this.

Perhaps it was my "Entire Island of Aruba Searches for Blonde White Chick" title (ala The Onion) that brought out the sui haters - and got me deleted over 20 times in a single thread.

It was an episode of self discovery. I discovered that I am a mysoginist, a queer sexist pig, a blonde hater, a chick hater (oh shit I just did it again), and a cracka hata, which is odd since my very own mother was female, blonde and cracka, but no bird genes.

And I'm still bitter.

Bastards, bring it - (bobs, weaves)

8. Interesting "viewer mail" on "The Abrams Report" last night...
...and this is from memory, not a quote, but...

The viewer was addressing the Governor of Alabama's call to boycott Aruba, and they gave the statistics for the number of missing / abducted teens in Alabama and said called on the Governor for an Alabama boycott.

YES, when ANY person, regardless of age, gender, race or cuteness is MISSING, it is (potentially) a tragedy. But I also believe that the Holloway situation...ON THE PART OF JOURNALISTS...is seen as another Michael Jackson / Kobe Bryant / Terri Schiavo attempt to grandstand before the cameras.

It's theater.

Yes, Natalee Holloway is missing, presumed dead or worse. I just don't think the media REALLY cares (beyond "looking good")...

25. In addition to theater, it is also distraction.
Tavener is being creamed in this thread for being sarcastic. We all know that the MSM is using the 'missing, pretty, white, girl' news blitz as distraction.

How many hispanic, or asian, or african american pretty girls go missing? Or boys? Where is the outrage over that?

And, the misogyny thing doesn't fly. Tavener is so far from being a misogynist, it is ridiculous.

Some of you need to lighten up. And I don't mean you Bush_Eats_Beef. I am just ranting at some of the comments in this thread.

...and the reason for my previous post is that I get "creamed" ALL THE TIME on DU in pretty much the same manner in which Taverner is getting "creamed" right now.

I've been accused of all KINDS of crap, and it never ceases to amaze me how many people start TELLING ME what my intentions were in posting the material. More often than not I alert the mods...that's right, I alert them on MYSELF...and ask them to shut my thread down.

HEY, folks...sarcasm and irony have been used for centuries in order to focus attention on areas that NEED attention.

So I posted MY post as an acknowledgment to Taverner that to be great is to be misunderstood.

Illegitimus non Carborundum, Taverner...Illegitimus non Carborundum.

24. There's an underlying motive that bugs me
Peel back the "missing white girl" layer of blogs/forums/tvnews and you'll find a very heavy rightwing Repub political slant. It goes beyond just distracting the koolaid drinkers with new bubbles.

There's a sense of proprietary ownership over white girls. I can't find the words to express it any better than that. Creeps me out though.

Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 03:05 PM by DesertedRose
I agree. Sort of like "we need to protect our beautiful, desirable white women from the bad, evil (fill-in-the-blank)."

Who cares about women (or children) of color, especially if they're poor. They aren't the "beautiful, desirable" ones worth saving.

It may sound like a stretch, but I think this RW attitude is also behind issues of infant mortality, adoption, abortion....pay attention to where their energy, attention and money goes towards who "deserves" to get "saved," versus who falls through the cracks.

Edit: I also think they need to feed the line that whites are victims to people of color, so they can't ever afford to portray a person of color in peril as a victim (Katrina) because "they" are the "enemy."

41. I think you said it very well ~
although I have to say, I hadn't thought about it that way before. Still, it's interesting how these missing, white girls become obsessions with the Freepers, eg. And the usual rightwing talking head 'legal' experts on TV, screaming for blood unless something is done about it.

Saw one the other night, forget her name, but wow, talk about vicious, even screaming that the people of Aruba, the entire population, needed to suffer in order to get the message that 'we won't tolerate a missing American woman' ~ laughable, when you consider how many missing Americans there are ~ even being reminded of that didn't slow down this ranting, screaming 'legal expert'!!

Yes, I do think there is a definite racism under the surface.

Oh, and btw, I got the point of the OP. Sometimes it takes sarcasm to make a point.

Thank god some sanity prevailed in the Senate, where Shelby's demand for an official government boycott of Aruba was dismissed as 'not being the position of the US government'.

I will now go and look up how many people are missing in the state of Alabama.

Personally, I think all television networks should list missing people every night, set aside time to find the lost children, of whom there are many. Natalie Holloway's story is a tragedy. I just don't understand why all the others are not seen to be as important. And I think these heavy-handed tactics have lost sympathy for the family and drawn attention to the inequity of media coverage of missing persons.

That may be a good thing, if it results in more coverage of others who are missing. But I'm not holding my breath. Maybe because your post is on target, more than I had thought before.

38. I'm glad she's okay, but.....
I missed the whole Brazilian (pun intended for the cable x coverage) missing Mormon very lovely exchange student girl in a cheerleaders outfit (required) who went missing a few days ago (post Dem sweep of VA/NJ Gov wins) after a failed hitchhiking attempt to her church group, and yes, did I say I'm glad she's okay? Is this what this thread is about? Heh.

Somehow I think there are more non-political stories out there that might actually be informational and educational. In my local area alone, a rampage of school bus accidents and boyfriends killing girlfriends infants...much more serious, imho. So why don't these make the cable newsies?
