Municipal unions are the backbone of California's middle class. Teachers, firefighters, nurses, police, prison guards, and other state workers are California's middle class. Pure and simple. They get to be middle class BECAUSE of their unions. Without these unions and their political muscle, these professions WOULD NOT pay middle class salaries AT ALL.

Picking a political fight with them is the height of stupidity. Contrast Arnold with Bloomberg in NY. Bloomberg made nice with the municipal unions before the elections, and he won in a landslide.

On local and state level politics, municipal unions drive the process. Why? Because middle class private sector jobs are disappearing. The last hope that a majority of the American public has of ever seeing the middle class is through government work.
