Mapes said the whole mess bore the earmarks of the type of destruction campaign done by friends of Bush...

She's talking about proportional spacing and says she has evidence about that now...
She says Wolf's reporting was WRONG on the proportional spacing and what could done then and said that if he had spent more time researching he would find he did wrong reporting....

Free Republic, then another, then another....
Mentions CBS' new blog Public Eye which addresses Mapes...
But no mention of any "liberal" blogs and the research done there...

But...at least she did point out how the conservative blogs picked it up. On the Free Republic site, the part about the typing was highlighted in yellow.....the incorrect claim.

Wolfie Question - Don't you have to be 1000% sure

Mapes - I was sure
doc analysis questions were off point. Content was accurate. Other thing, first interview with Barnes who made the phone call (for Bush)

Wolfie - how troubling were the docs.

Howie - Mary Mapes failed to prove docs were authentic.
Story still has problems.

Mapes - I disagree. I do in my book get a number of new docs which prove that proportional spacing did exist back then. CBS chose to make this divisive and chose to stick with conservative bloggers.

Howie - Mary, your story has problems. Why did CBS rush this to air?

Mapes - I would have waited a week or so but the story would not have changed. Including the toxic reaction to the story. Campaign of destruction by Bush admin (typical).

Wolf - Conservative bloggers were successful.

1. Bush DID get preferential treatment (ALL rich boys did)
2. His low test scores did not warrant his going ahead of others
3. He failed to take a physical and was NOT sent to Viet Nam as others did for similar infractions
4. He got a transfer after he was DENIED one by a different commander
5. His time in Alabama is unaccounted for
6. NO ONE remembers him, when most people remember who they went to summer camp with when they were 9 years old
7. He was the son of a "Big Shot", and people would have remembered him
8. His records mysteriously "disappeared", when there are records online for soldiers in the Revolutionary War..

Thos e are the bullet points that should be hit on..every time..

the "type-size...lady at the livestock show..meetings in parking lots stuff" is just distraction mumbo-jumbo to discredit the basic underlying story.

He is an obvious shill for the bush admin, his wife has done work for the bush admin, continues to do work for republicans and he will do nothing that might jeopardize her relationship with the repubs, imo.

Mapes was great, she stood toe to toe with Howie and he looked like an ass as a consequence.

and all of a sudden Wolf changed the subject to how CBS was discrediting her story. He didn't seem the least bit curious about the fonts, etc., which he had harped on seconds before. His only mission, it is evident, is to further trash Mary Mapes and the entire Guard story.
