I don;t think the Chinese really care about the Avian flu
They are cutting farmer's incomes, and encouraging them to move to cities.. They have a "brazillion" people (most of whom are not that "productive").. I have a sneaky suspicion that they wpon;t mind all that much if some of their people "go bye-bye"..

It could solve a vexing problem they have had for ages...too many people..

1. This is indeed the same country that has a "one child" policy so ...
you're probably right. The only thing that'll scare them is if other nationals don't want to travel there (especially with the Olympics coming up).

2. Leno had a great joke about Avian Flu the other night.
He had the Bush impersonator on and asked him about it; the impersonator replied "I never drink that bottled water"

3. They beat SARS last year
and they are doing a good job trying to get bird flu under control. So far it seems they respond to emergencies a lot better then W responded to Katrina. Now who do you think wants to cull the population?

5. or did SARS just run its course?
I think they are trying to look like they are trying...bercause of the olympics, but deep down, does anyone really think they care much about the "common man" there?

6. I have a friend that travels there all the time
they don't look at the world the same way we do but they sure know how to work together a lot better then we do, especially when it comes to solving problems. I think the Chinese do a pretty good job taking care of their own people, considering most of the country was near starvation 50 years or so ago.

10. SARS did not just run its course
it was aggressively contained

if you tried to travel during the SARS era, you would have seen it, on a flight into central america we had a lady cough and be from canada and the whole plane was stuck on the runway until they could pull her off and test her

7. Life is cheaper there than here, true,

which is why the Chinese have only recently addressed the smoking problem there. However, the avian flu follows the pattern of the 1918 flu in attacking healthy, productive adults, and with the recent influx of manufacturing jobs, they need all the manpower they can get.

The Chinese also care about their food supply, and protein is scarce enough there. Even what we consider songbirds may be trapped, caged, fattened, and eaten to supply it. Avian flu has been hard on the bird population so yes, they are aggressively trying to stop it by culling both sick and exposed birds. They would be delighted if it would simply disappear.

To suggest they have been less than diligent is mistaken, although China is a huge country with an enormous rural population, making the logistics difficult.

Consider what the attempts will be like here. The wealthy will get the best treatment, the insured will get whatever they can afford due to deductibles and copays, and the uninsured will be ignored to death.

8. They're bothering...
...to inoculate over 4 billion-with-a-b fowl.

Surely that's not benign neglect.

9. nonsense of course they care
it's an economic issue, avian flu can decimate the poultry industry if allowed to run unchecked, they're not vaccinating all those chickens for a laugh

i agree the world is over-populated but since avian flu has almost negligible transmission rate to humans if they want to get rid of excess population a better way would be to continue to condemn people to death and cut them up for their body parts, waiting for some mutation that may never occur is way too subtle for me if i wanted to wipe out a lot of people

avian flu is an issue for the poultry industry

11. The elite cares only for the elite. So if Chinese elite work with US elite
they can be rid of us all while they sit cozily at home.

It's not about war; neither side wants that.

It's about us killing us off while they sit back and laugh.

If it was about war, would Poppy need to have flown to China before Bushbrat had?!?! Hardly.
