and never for a moment dreamed that the same American public that bought all their lies in the first place would EVER see the truth. Their arrogance had grown to a point they felt they could never be touched even if some of the real dirt came out. They thought the same old "secret secret" tactics they'd gone with for so long would work forever.
They didn't bargain on the persistence of those who opposed them eventually digging out the truth and putting it out there for anyone to judge for themselves, and they didn't understand that the Iraq occupation dragging out for so long would actually BOTHER even those who had initially supported the invasion.
I heard someone remind us on TV yesterday that after a while into the Watergate scandal/investigation, Nixon came out to speak to Americans and angrily said, "I am not a crook!" I remember that really well. He couldn't believe before then that he would HAVE to try to defend himself because he was accustomed to so much power to do whatever he pleased and to keep secrets about his wrongdoings.
But the people pretty much laughed in his face when he made that idiotic "I am not a crook" statement, and his downfall continued apace -- or actually it sped up, IMO.
Wouldn't surprise me to see the same pattern hold true with this administration as Americans see their ridiculous efforts at "fighting back" ringing hollow and proving nothing good about them or what they have done. The only way they can attempt to excuse their own behavior is to attack the Democrats who bought their package of lies and supported what they were doing. Pretty weak, if you ask me....
