Does anyone else find the implications of NBC's censor of this chilling?
New York Times - November 25, 2005
NBC Stuck to Sunny Rebroadcast of Last Year's M&M's
By ANDY NEWMAN
NBC did not interrupt its broadcast of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade yesterday to bring viewers the news that an M&M balloon had crashed into a light pole, injuring two sisters.

In fact, when the time came in the tightly scripted three-hour program for the M&Ms' appearance, NBC weaved in tape of the balloon crossing the finish line at last year's parade - even as the damaged balloon itself was being dragged from the accident scene. At 11:47 a.m., as an 11-year-old girl and her 26-year-old sister were being treated for injuries, the parade's on-air announcers - Katie Couric, Matt Lauer and Al Roker - kept up their light-hearted repartee from Herald Square, where the parade ends.

"Will these classic candymen get out of this delicious dilemma?" Mr. Roker asked, referring not to the accident but to the premise of the attraction, a red M&M's attempt to save his yellow counterpart, who had been blown from the basket of a hot-air balloon.

Ten minutes later, the upbeat broadcast ended without mention of the accident in Times Square. CNN carried a flash about the accident at 11:51, while the parade telecast was still going on. NBC's cable news network, MSNBC, followed two minutes later. And WNBC, the New York affiliate, carried the news at 12:30 p.m.

But Cameron Blanchard, a spokeswoman for NBC's entertainment division, which broadcast the parade, said that the anchors did not deviate much from the script because it was not clear at the time what had happened. "We had been alerted that there had been an incident," she said. "But no further details had been conveyed to us."

When the balloon failed to arrive at Herald Square at the appointed time, she said, "we rolled with some previously recorded footage."

That said, the situation made for a jarring confluence of scripted and unscripted reality.

At 11:47 a.m., about 7 minutes after the accident, the screen image faded from live coverage of a high school marching band from Kennesaw, Ga., to last year's tape of the M&M balloon. Ms. Couric, advising the audience that it was now looking at old tape, riffed on the balloon's concept of M&M's in distress.

"Now, because of today's windy conditions," Ms. Couric told viewers, "these characters are on video, and if we told you they were not in a panic, we'd be full of hot air."

Mr. Lauer, Ms. Couric's co-anchor on the "Today" show, chimed in: "You may be thinking 'color us clueless' as they flirt with trouble, with Yellow hanging on by a thread and Red struggling to keep his best buddy from flying off into the blue."

Mr. Roker then spoke his lines: "Will these classic candymen get out of this delicious dilemma? Hard to say, but when it comes to sweetness, Yellow and Red continue to melt your heart, but not in your hand."

Ms. Blanchard said she did not know what the announcers knew about the accident at the time.

After that, it was on to the Pillsbury Doughboy, and, bringing up the rear, Santa and his wife. "Old Saint Nick and Mrs. Claus, his wife of, what, 200 years?" Ms. Couric said. "What a marriage. What a team!"

With that, the parade was over.

"It's obvious the three of us have had a great time today," Mr. Lauer concluded, "and we hope all of you did as well."

Patrick LaForge contributed reporting for this article.

28. Kinda Like "Morgue" Footage
My bets are they had videos of all the floats on stand-by in case there was a problem. These shows are tightly scripted and if the balloon doesn't arrive on time I'm sure there's that stand-by video ready to go. Also, in this age of instant digital, it takes seconds to find and call up that kind of footage.

My bitch with the Today show has and always will be how they blur the line between being news and entertainment. One minute Lauer's grilling a Dick Durbin and the next he's playing entertainer/stand-up. He's not very good at either...but he sure looks and sounds nice.

No tin foil here...these people aren't THAT smart.

Peace...

29. I doubt it but...
they had from 43rd to 34th Street to find it. The ten minutes or so was probably enough time to find it. They may keep tape clips of old balloons on hand in case of other sorts of mishaps, too. I seem to remember that they showed an old clip one year when a balloon couldn't be inflated.

4. If we can't trust NBC to provide realistic footage of a freakin' parade...
I guess it would be a bit much to ask a company whose parent company makes bombs to give anywhere near an accurate description of an illegal invasion, huh?:sarcasm:

scripted (and paid-for) advertising masquerading as programming, and the unscripted (but entertaining) drama of possible sidewalk mayhem.

10. As a former news editor...
I find their option to go with all Happy Faces quite an indication of just how important "news" is (regardless of how sketchy details might've been at the time) vs a safe and orderly ritual (parade) even if it meant a blatant misrepresentation of what was actually taking place.

It's one thing to put a happy face on a potential tragedy, but another thing entirely to utterly ignore it and use footage of something that is NOT ACTUALLY TAKING PLACE.

That, to me, is more chilling than this hateful weather we're having in Louisville right now.

36. The entire obnoxious event was one long commercial...
For Macy's, for the companies whose balloons advertised products, television shows, junk food and toys meant to entice children (such as Ronald McDonald, a happy daffy clown who encourages kids to eat the most unhealthy food on the planet, thus ensuring terrible eating habits for life).

What was worse than the almost non-stop commercialism of the Madison Avenue "parade" was the mindless, chipper, breathtakingly STUPID chatter of the Today Show nitwits. Never have I heard such brainless twaddle come from the mouths of three adults over such a long period of broadcast time in my life. They acted so giddy saying their silly shit I wondered if they were taking hits of brandy on the side.

It was a nightmare and I'm sorry that I had it on yesterday while I puttered around the house. I'm still numb from the rank stupidity of it.

12. It's probably more about marketing and less about deception
M&M Mars probably has a contract with NBC to show it's "commercial" as it crosses the bandstand. Maybe the contract specifies that old footage be shown if there's a problem? Just a guess.

And we are in a lotta trouble if MSM can't even cover a PARADE honestly!

I just checked with the Ministry of Truth and they deny there was an accident at the
"America Is Infallible Parade." They also deny any knowledge of this "Thanksgiving Day Parade" you speak of.
Lets not recklessly suggest things are happening that are not reported. Remember, the Ministry of Homeland Security is watching you.

18. The whole parade is just one long commercial for various products
The Broadways shows are advertising, the products are advertising, Disney, M&M's, movies, toys, it's all just product placement. It must be the most commercial parade in history. Of course they would not show any of the products in a negative light. They paid big money for their airtime.

Sure. When the M&M balloon 'failed to arrive', they just happened to have previous footage of the M&M balloon queued up to roll. I believe that just as much as I believe that WMD's still exist in Iraq.

32. When Fox News can trash you for being infotainment ...
... you know you're not NEWS any more.

Of course, those goobers who do parades are NOT newspeople. They are TABLOID TV.

Still, you should know that newsworthy items get on the air. They didn't want to disturb their kiddie corps of viewers, or the commercials being sold to them.

NETWORK.

35. I don't see what the big deal is. I bet there were many other accidents
all over the city at the same time that also went unreported. Don't look to a talk show to bring you "news". I would argue that two people getting injured by a falling object is not news. We get far too much reporting from ambulance chasers and not enough issue coverage anyway.
