I'm a prick. I just called Duke Cunningham's office
Here's the conversation:

Obnoxious woman: Hello, Randy Cunningham's office.

Me: Yes, I'm looking at the Congressman's website and I'm wondering if you could direct me to news on his felony conviction?

Obnoxious woman: (five second pregnant pause) I don't believe we have the on the website.

Me: Oh, well, is there anything about him resigning in disgrace?

Obnoxious woman: No, but I can pass that message on to the people who do the webpage.

Me: I don't believe he'll need a webmaster in prison. Tell the Congressman I hope he enjoys prison.

<click>

That put a huge smile on my face.

7. Yes, very naughty.
But I was glad he at least 'fessed up and avoided millions for a useless trial.

I wish him well in prison. What a come down. Greed is a sad thing.

now, I have to admit, there is a part of me that would like to spit on his shoes...but I am all about rehabilitation and doing work with prisoners (one of my volunteer areas) and now that he's a for-sure crook, I gotta give him the same treatment.

28. Oh please trouble...
he fessed up when he got caught !! He denied it right up until only weeks ago because he found out the prosecutor had him nailed ten ways to Sunday. It not only would have cost him a fortune to go to trial but his jail time for the conviction would have been far worse than what it will be now.

Give them your sympathy when they have morals before they're found out to be government slime. Not after they learn they're going to be fingerprinted for their felony.

44. If I thought that I couldn't do prison volunteer work
they are all the same to me, whether they confess before, during, after or never. When you get that low you grasp at anything to maintain your sanity, and if coming clean is a soul issue for him, then I respect it.

Besides, I just LOVE knowing exactly what he did and can't wait until we find out exactly who else was involved! (ok, I'm a nice person most of the time, but not all!)

I'm just glad he 'fessed up so we don't have to waste time, effort and taxpayers dollars on a trial, and glad we don't have to listen to continued lies from him.

20. Hope is why most of us are here (IMHO)
Delay hasn't admitted to anything yet except maybe to the little White Angel on his right shoulder. Wait...Wait...I've been corrected by a voice from above. It seems that Tom Delay was never issued a White Angel at all, but instead was given 2 Red Angels...the kind with horns instead of halo's. That explains a lot!

24. As a former Political Intern...
Can I please ask everybody to recognize that calls like this are in poor taste and accomplish nothing. I'm sure it felt good, but ost likely the person answering the phone was either an intern or a (very low) level staff assistant who has absolutely nothing to do with anything. If you have a legitimate opinion or issue you care about, good on you, but messages like this never get recorded, will obviously never reach the congressman, and only drive people (like me) insane. I can't tell you how many wackos would go on and on about how I was going to hell because of my boss's pro-choice position. It sucked.

38. From experience, most political interns support the boob they're interning
for. It's part of the game. If they can't handle phone calls like mine (and I was very respectful), then politics is NOT their forte and they need to get out.

I probably spoke to a college neo-con.

25. You Forgot to Ask
"Does he still think the liberals in Congress should be lined up and shot?"

(Yes, he apparently said that.)

Time to call back.

For those who are whining about this--it's her job to deal with constituents. She should relay the mood of the constituents to her bosses. I doubt if she's strongly opposed to the good man and is only working there to feed her kids. Heck, if she weren't a loyal party woman, she probably wouldn't have been hired.

26. I weep for "Duke" Cunningham.
Yes, I do. The man was the finest navy aviator for his generation, a 'Ace' with 5 air to air victories over Vietnam, the founding Commanding Officer of Top Gun, a fighter pilot without peer...

He never should have gone into politics. He should have gotten a job with Grumman or Boeing, and helped them design (and sell, I admit) fighter planes, written his memoirs, and passed into obscurity as a (lower case h) hero.

He has soiled the memory of himself. And I grieve for what might have, should have, been.

I will not defend his actions, nor claim that he should be punished lightly, nor that it was anyone's fault but his own. I merely wish that the man has stuck to what he was best at.

Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 10:12 PM by TahitiNut
After all, if someone were to post their agreement, it'd be on-topic and not an ad hominem ('personal attack'), right?

Me? I think the conversation shows courage, honesty, and integrity - "manly" values, I guess. So, symbolizing such values iconically in that way is appropriate, I suppose. (In that sense, I think Cheney is surely mis-named.) :silly:

34. Bad. We are better than that. Don't you remember the Congressional
Black Caucus getting tons of freeper hate phone calls during Katrina?

We fight like adults cause we are. That woman on the phone may have been one of the biggest duped in the case. She tied her career to someone who stole. Have some sympathy for her. She has some lessons to learn and you are getting in the way of that.

quite clear to her who betrayed her.

And all those other staffers who tied their star to someone who went criminal. Time for all them to do a little thinking. Don't interfere with that. The truth is speaking pretty clear to all of them.

39. as far as I'm concerned
interns and LAs are basically blameless in who they work for on the Hill, unless it's the leadership, basically, it's the person who happens to represent the district their parents live in.
