Duke Cunningham is a hero
“Duke Cunningham is a hero,” DeLay said during a press briefing Tuesday. “He is an honorable man of high integrity.”

If I was a rat like DeLay I would be too embarrassed to say stuff like that. But I guess when you have unmitigated gall, then you have no qualms about being an ass. :)

If you were, you'd plead guilty, resign from Congress, and face your time in the slammer instead of hiring some shyster lawyer to try to get your sorry ass off on a technicality.

7. Actually, Duke Cunningham IS a hero
A war hero.

He was nominated for the Medal of Honor.

Received the Navy Cross

Received two Silver Stars

15 Air Medals

Purple Heart

He was also an Ace in Vietnam.

Whatever else Randy Cunningham is, he remains a war hero. I am disappointed he would sink so low, but regardless of his current disgrace, you cannot take those achievments away from him.

13. He WAS a Hero
And maybe he still is

But his actions still put him in the slammer where any member of congress should go if they accept bribes.

Apparently he has agreed to spill the beans on others.

Thanks

On this will get good! Good for him. I heard his speech on Franken's show earlier today and he seemed really sorry he lost the respect and trust of family/friends and people who he serves for so maybe this is his way of making up for that. Do you know who all he's going to spill on?

47. Yes
And I do think it's admirable he admitted what happened and isn't doing like DeLay and going from court to court until he finds one friendly towards him. He's doing the appropriate time according to the law and he obviously respects the law more than Tom DeLay does.

Instead of the Delay desperation tour, at least Cunningham had the balls to face the press and the public and admit that he lied and betrayed his constituents and stated his willingness to accept his punishment.

27. I'm kind of with you. I did have to admire him for that--I thought his
statement about "taking the consequences like a man" was very telling and may very well appeal to old-fashioned conservatives like my dad. But, though that may SEEM like a bad thing for us, I think that it could work against the rethugs in more than one way. First, it's another scandal on top of a teetering heap of them. Second, his statement today was a very sharp contrast to Buscho's constant, unfailing refusal to accept responsibility for ANYthing.

I did find myself feeling bad for the guy, at least part of me. He truly did seem sorry, and gosh...I guess that's why I'm a freaking bleeding heart. But before anyone flames me, I know, I know, what he did was horrible AND he's on the wrong side of things, so my pity for him is counteracted with a fair degree of satisfaction.

because he didn't point fingers at anyone but himself.

Do you mean because he didn't implicate others, didn't rat on anyone, that makes him a hero?

51. You're confused I think
There's a huge difference between refusing to implicate other wrongdoers (itself a crime if crime is what's being discussed) and blaming others for your own faults and failings.

I hope you are able to sort it out for yourself before you need a solid understanding of the difference.

for sure. At least he saved the taxpayers and his constituents the long process. Unlike DeLay, he's gonna just step up and take his lumps, late though they may be.

When you're Tom DeLay, you can only look up, because there is nothing beneath you. You are the bottom of the barrel.

35. Yeah. My feeling, watching the video, is that he might actually have
REMORSE over his actions. Fancy that!

Of course he deserves any penalty handed down, every day of any jail sentence. But even though it's way overdue for ONE of these thugs to finally go to jail in disgrace, I have to say I felt no joy watching the video.

I honestly doubt if someone like DeLay would even be capable of remorse, or Cheney or shrub.

42. Talk about heaping the indignity on Cunningham
He has to publically confess his corruption, and then after all of that he goes home to see Tom DeLay vouching for his character. That could push him over the edge.

BTW, did you see that the Duke left a forwarding address on the back of his yacht?

Shot down North Vietnam's top ace in a legendary dogfight that helped change US Airforce doctrine about hoe planes were armed and air battles fought. However, history is full of brave and able warriors who let their nation down off the battlefield.

50. Good point about the "History Channel"
Edited on Tue Nov-29-05 08:42 PM by billbuckhead
The History Channel is the propaganda channel if there ever was one. Goebbels couldn't do better. Duke's dogfight was a good story and supposedly caused the Air Force to quit relying so much on missiles, put machine guns back on our planes and to acknowledge that the MiG's were good dogfighters in the hands of good pilots.
