First O'Donnell, now Matthews: "Everyone sort of likes the president,
except for the real whack-jobs"

On the November 28 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews said: "Everybody sort of likes the president, except for the real whack-jobs, maybe on the left," adding, "I mean, like him personally." In fact, polling data reveals that a majority of Americans have an unfavorable view of President Bush, and his overall approval ratings hoverfrom the high 30-percent range to the low 40s. MSNBC's O'Donnell claimed Bush is seen as authentic; polls say otherwise »
On the November 27 broadcast of NBC's syndicated The Chris Matthews Show, MSNBC chief White House correspondent Norah O'Donnell claimed that President Bush has retained his "authenticity" with the public.

27. Personally? Who Gives A Rip...
When I need work on my car done, I go to a great mechanic. He's thorough, does a complete job and is a total asshole. So be it...I'm paying for the work he's doing, I'm not looking to live with him. That's how I feel about politicians...they're being paid to do a job for me...I'm not looking for party buddies. Tweety definite is!

Remember, Tweety also pooh-poohed Clinton's 60 plus popularity ratings during his inquisition and second term...downplaying it as much as he's playing up the asshat manchild. Welch sure got to him good.

NBC, MSGOP and the General Electric media empire is sure doing their best to protect those war profits and other perks they get from this regime.

Here's my text:

As a moderate Democrat, a senior military officer, and a longtime critic of this administration, I would hardly put myself in the category of "whack jobs" simply because I do not like, and have never liked, this president. He is incompetent, uncaring, and obtuse in his conduct of national and international affairs.

You need to cash the checks the GOP sent you, and use that money to pay your doctor to adjust your medication. Shame on you.

I hate to disappoint you, but many people other than "real whack jobs" are done with Bush as a person and as a president.

I know quite a few former Bush supporters these days, even here in this rural small town. It seems to me that only the gullible, the uninformed, the "true believers", and media pundits like yourself still cling to this failed presidency.

Not too long ago, I wrote to the show demanding an apology from her for calling anti war protesters "radicals" when the polls show that the majority of Americans also believe the war is wrong. Needless to say, I'm still waiting. :)

He's probably trying to suck up to the GOP thugs so his brother can get some money from Kenny Boy Mehlman (seen here dancing uncomfortably with a woman, as an aside: http://capitolbuzz.blogspot.com/ ).

28. Call them on this.
Here's the link. The individual TV shows and blogs are listed at the site.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/

The Washington Post used the term "popular wartime president" in their coverage of Bush for about 18 months following the September 11th attacks. When his poll ratings were more negative than positive, they talked about his "sagging popularity," as though the popularity had merely declined slightly. :eyes:

I'm sick of members of the media telling me that we all have to believe Bush's faith is sincere, that he's a nice guy, that he's impossible to dislike. That's an idiotic assertion to make about anyone, but especially idiotic in light of the polarized atmosphere in this country.

Besides, the fact that Bush relies on negative campaigning (and always has) pretty much puts to rest the myth of the nice George W. Bush. He obviously didn't have a problem with vicious attacks against McCain in the South Carolina primary of 2000.

The Wall Street Journal's Resident Pro-Life GOP Moralist Knocks Up His Girlfriend's Daughter... and Lets Her Get an Abortion!
By Tamara Baker

snip:

Sept. 5, 2001 -- SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA (APJP) -- As I think I'll find myself having to say more often lately, I swear I did not make this up!
Yet another GOP moral arbiter has been caught with his pants down (I know, I know; Republican exposed as hypocrite, sun rises in east. But I digress...). This time, the exposed Republican hypocrite is none other than the Wall Street Journal's moralist-in-chief, Council for National Policy member (and allegedly fervent anti-abortionist) John Fund.

Fund went and impregnated the daughter of an old girlfriend of his -- and then John Fund, that staunch pro-lifer, looked the other way when she aborted his child.

Both the mother, Melinda Pillsbury-Foster, and daughter, Morgan Pillsbury, have decided to go to the press -- in this case, John Connolly of WeaselSearch.com. And they did so in a most spectacular way -- in the form of an audiotaped conversation between John Fund and Morgan Pillsbury over what the nastily-browbeating Fund says are Morgan's mom's threats against him.

If you can't get Media Player to work -- or if listening to John Fund for more than fifteen seconds makes you want to put your fist through a window -- check out the transcript instead.

Now, of course John Fund may have taken both Morgan and her mother lying down (or standing up, or doggie-style), but he certainly isn't taking the exposure of his hypocrisy -- or of the audiotape -- lying down. John Connolly was originally going to run a longer version of the WeaselSearch piece in Talk magazine, but Fund put heavy pressure on Talk not to run the story -- so WeaselSearch.com got the honors (and the vastly increased, and advertiser-pleasing, web traffic) instead.

It's my pleasure and privilege to enhance WeaselSearch's public profile by relaying the news of this story. John Fund will soon find that trying to stop the Spartacuses of the Internet from getting the story out is not unlike the troubles another famous (though fictional) moralizing hypocrite, Major Frank Burns of M*A*S*H fame, had in living down the broadcasting of his own sins to the world.

I promise you this, dear reader: If ever I catch this clown on a call-in TV show like C-SPAN, you KNOW I will bring this up.

34. my letter
Mr. Matthews,

Maybe you are not aware that the brush you used to paint those who now oppose Mr. Bush and his disastrous policies was rather broad and quite inaccurate. Personally, I have disliked Mr. Bush since he first opened his Connecticutt Yankee mouth and spoke in that inauthentic, fake Texas cowboy drawl, testifying to his born-again righteousness, because I knew it was all an act, a ruse to fool the well meaning. So, OK, I guess I am, by your definition, a whack job.

However, I am surrounded at work by Republican moderates who seemed to think they were somehow going to benefit from this reverse Robin Hood presidency and voted for him twice, mostly out of greed and ignorance. But even the staunchest of them now regularly make fun of him, speak openly of the quagmire in Iraq, and for the first time actually admit that his tax policies did not benefit them. The cronyism that led to the Katrina failure deeply embarasses them, and the mounting GOP scandals involving DeLay, Abramoff, Libby, Rove, Cunningham, etc., have made even the staunchest supporters take a closer look at the leadership at the top.

By calling people who are just now able to rouse themselves from their own apathy to finally take notice to what is going on "whack jobs" you are only proving what an out of touch "whack" you youself are.

35. My letter:
Dear Mr Matthews,

I have recently started watching your program while following the Hurricane Katrina story. While I have not always agreed with your point of view, I had thought you were fair. Your recent comments:

"Everybody sort of likes the president, except for the real whack-jobs, maybe on the left," adding, "I mean, like him personally."

are an insult to viewers like me and my husband: well educated, honest, tax paying citizens who feel that George W. Bush was fraudulently elected, purposely misled our nation into an immoral war, has allowed torture and incendiary devices to risk our nation to be held responsible for war crimes, has caused a huge deficit that our children will inherit all while his corrupt cronies rob the national treasury, is responsible for destroying 50+ years of diplomacy, his policies have caused irreparable damage to our environment, and he has shown disregard for our constitution. George W. Bush ignored the pleas of thousands of Americans suffering after Hurricane Katrina hit. He is more concerned with his vacations and free time than to be bothered by the needs of the American people. WE DO NOT LIKE GEORGE W BUSH. WE DO NOT RESPECT HIM. By your premise, we are "whack-jobs". Since his approval ratings range from the high 30's to low 40's, our country has a large "Whack-Job" Contingency. Perhaps you should show us more respect. If you researched this group, I believe you would find we are better educated, more informed and well read than the general population.

I resent your comments. There are many other news programs to watch. If you prefer to insult your viewers, we will simply change channels.

Edited on Tue Nov-29-05 11:47 AM by pat_k
Why to you think con men are able to con?

Some diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder are quite charming. Descriptions of Bush make are very telling. Apparently, he has some skill at "turning on the charm," but just a quickly that charm turns off and the abuser comes through.

It's tough to imagine, but when a person has no empathy or compassion, other beings are just objects to be manipulated -- and when you take genuine human feeling and reaction out of the mix, manipulation is a much simpler matter.

Often, the victims see the awful truth only after they have suffered an incredible amount of damage.

44. My Quick Email Comments To Matthews On His Wackjob Show
Chris, was just wondering where you got your information and confirmation that everyone likes or (sort of) likes the president except for the whackjobs on the left.

If that is what you want to call me along with the huge percentage or majority of the people that I understand from the polls that do not agree with you and they at least have facts to back it up, so be it. I proudly accept being called a "whackjob" on the left. I have much respect for the Office of the President but feel this president needs to come forward and be honest with the American people to also earn this respect and trust.

However, nice attempt of trying to drum up support for Bush & Co. If you just want to cater to the right, just move to Fox.

45. "Authenticity?" Most think Bush is a liar. An "authentic" liar maybe?
Is that how one interprets his extremely low numbers on honesty?

46. Dear Chris
On 11/28 you stated to John Fund:
"Everybody sort of likes the president, except for the real whack-jobs, maybe on the left," adding, "I mean, like him personally."

Just think, if all of us "whackjobs" turned you off you can complete your metamorphosis into the Limbaugh of MSNBC. Fortunately the low ratings will cancel your show.

Here's an old but true adage: "Don't bite the 'whackjob' hand that feeds you."

49. So Sick of So-Called MSN (not) Speaking for "All Americans!"
When in fact, they do not.

Notice to MSN: You don't speak for me, nor anyone I know. So, stop it. Be a patriot. Stop antagonizing you're fellow country men & women...

Oh, forget about it. It's a waste of time. All high-paid pundits for *!

50. I'd say the only people who still like him are the whackjobs
I know some very conservative republicans who don't really like him anymore, even though they agree with his politics. Everything about him comes off as phony.
