2. No, dear --- we really DON'T know what to do with it.
George and pals never planned that far ahead.
They were jonesing to get IN and start steamrolling the place.
They never thought about what would happen NEXT.

4. Could it be that it's because Franken is a big supporter of Israel?
I know that a lot of supporters of Israel back the war in Iraq.

10. He has said many times that we should not just pull out.
He also said that he was in favor of it in the beginning.

Or did you miss that?

As for "not just pulling out", even Murtha feels that way.

In his book "Lies" he tells how he was for it in the beginning but he was wrong.

12. I can be REALLY, REALLY uninformed
But I was posing a question.

Do you know if Al is a big supporter of Israel?

Are you informed on this issue, pray tell?

16. As a non-practicing Jew, I think Al is as big a defender of Israel as
many of us are. (We're both non-observant Jews.) I don't think that either of us likes right wing governments, no matter where they are.

28. I've read all of
Franken's books, and he doesn't deal with the "issue" of Israel, that I recall.

Franken seems to be about decency, and honesty. I believe he's less concerned with partisan issues as he is with the deception republicans use to further their agenda. His role, to date, has been exposing this deception and it's use to trick Americans.

As far as him saying he doesn't know what to do, that doesn't seem like something that we should be up in arms about. As a longtime lurker, I know that most people on DU don't want a complete withdrawal over night. That would create more problems then it would solve.

American lives are not more precious then Iraqi lives, or anyone else. While out troops are in danger, constantly, removing them would create more danger for more people. And that responsibility would fall on our heads.

A lot of politicians have advanced responsible plans, such as Kerry.
As a democrat, and decent person(I'd like to think), I would like the resolution for this debacle to at least offer the people whose lives we've disrupted some hope and chance of stability.

I respect others who feel that an immediate withdrawal would accomplish this, but I do not agree with them. Maybe I'm a whore as well.

31. Welcome to DU.
Sure, philosophically, American lives are not more precious then Iraqi lives. But our government's duty is not so inclined.

For me, the only caution that should be used in getting out would be for the safety of out troops. We and Iraqis have already killed so many Iraqis what does it matter? We need to end our ongoing responsibility for this mess. Bush made a mistake. He should admit it and get the hell out. Then offer humanitarian aid to Iraq - and no more war.

24. There isn't any Mideast countries militaries involved.
Wait til Iran,Syria, and Turkey try to subjugate the Kurds. Wait til the Sunnis in Saudi Arabia try to annex the south and the Shiite Iranians the northeast. If you don't think the US will get involved,I'd have to disagree.

Dominoes? Let me tell you the biggest threat to peace in the area is the presence of the United States as an occupier. We can't force any peace let alone democracy on these people.

33. Incredible thread title
There are many people of good will, people who were opposed to and tried to stop the invasion of Iraq, who are saying we don't have any really good options at this point. Are they all "whores"?

Rightwing extremists took over the country so they could have the keys to the treasury, where they've proceeded to obscenely wallow like pigs in mud. Along with committing a multitude of other atrocities including the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Franken is one of the few public figures who stood up against this plaque of rightwing locusts -- during a time when this kind of opposition got you labeled a traitor -- and has been devoted to shining a light on their hideousness. But now he gets labeled with the same language of condemnation that we justifiably apply to the criminals that are destroying our country from within.

Incredible.

35. Whore explained
Al Franken is a whore because of his USO ties. He would serve our troops a lot better if he came out for their full and immediate withdrawal. But no, he has to dance around the issue so he will be allowed to "entertain". This is hypocrisy!

Sure, he has done a tremendous amount to unveil the evils of Bush and the Republicans. But, he is skirting the biggest issue.
