I've read several posts suggesting that recent positive economic indicators are being manipulated to give legitimacy to the administration. I doubt it.
I see it differently. This administration has only gotten the support they have through fear. Polls indicate that Bush is far past the point where anyone sentient would give him any credit for a positive economy.
The press is spinning as usual, but they're doing it because they are corporate entities. They and their advertisers depend on consumers.
Granted, the statistics chosen as a proxy for a good economy are not meaningful, the only economic statistic important to a government of, for and by the people is a healthy job market, and as we all know, this is one stat that isn't going to improve anytime soon.
This is the Republicans core strategic mistake. You can manipulate through fear for awhile, but once you go down that path, you can't later decide to take credit for security. People are all "feared out", and the corporate press likes it that way.
Don't worry about good economic news. Treat it with a healthy degree of scepticism, but don't worry that it'll help George.
