My lunch with two wingnuts. They're as crazy as we think they are.
I was sitting on a barstool in a Chili's restaurant, eating, sipping a virgin mary, and reading a newspaper. Two men, who looked to be in their 50s, came in and sat down nearby. I can't remember everything they said verbatim, but what I can remember is disgusting enough.

They were bitching about how DeLay, "Duke" Cunningham, "Scooter" Libbey, Bill Frist, and many others, were under attack by "them liberal fags." Their solution of choice was "We should napalm them all."

One of them went on to suggest that "Bush ought to send them all to Guantanamo," which led to a discussion about torture. They reached the conclusion that "It ain't torture if it's defending us. That fucking Pelosi would probably like to see them win."

Let's face it. They hate our guts. And many, if not most of us hate their guts. The difference is, if we were in control, we would despise their beliefs and ignore them. But they don't want to leave us alone. They really and truly would like to see all of us, and our beliefs, dead.

And if there's a moral to this story: always carry a bottle of Maalox or Pepto in your glove compartment.

Edited on Tue Nov-29-05 03:31 PM by longship
Let's get this straight. The proper terminology for somebody in their fifties (like myself) is "old fart". If you can't get your terminology correct while posting here at DU, you shouldn't be doing it.

Hell, I won't be an old fogey for a couple of years, at least.

"Geezer" is a state of mind.
I can show you 20-year old College Rethugs who qualify as geezers.

Then there's Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who at 86 is possibly "younger" than you. ;-)

I was so much older then
I'm younger than that now

57. On whether these men are in the minority...
You might be right, TallahasseeGrannie.

But I guess these two represent only a mild deviation--that is to say, somewhat more extreme in their views--from the norm in this punitively puritan land.

Half the nation voted for Bush even after Abu Ghraib; better than half still supported the war until a few months ago.

Going back further, majorities have been saying since the 80s that they'd sacrifice civil liberties for greater security. One reading of that is "civil liberties" translates, for social conservatives, as freedom for the people they hate.

But if you're right, then another way to see the Chilis idiots is in the light of bitterness over failure. They're watching the end of what (with luck) will prove to be a short-lived era--that, namely, of post-9/11 hysteria.

And they can't stand it. Every hope they had for remaking America in the image of vicious pro-war fascism is starting to crumble, from their vanity war to the declining popularity of their Asshole-in-Chief.

I would say this is both cause for hope and cause for concern. We could be at a tipping point culturally. It is possible America will retreat from Bushism and lick our wounds, and ask ourselves how we fell so low. Yet Bushism may yet find a way to reassert itself spectacularly and hideously.

37. There is actually an ENORMOUS bright spot in your horrific tale!!!
And the bright spot is this: They're GRIPING.

They feel put upon, under attack, forced to justify their hideous positions. Gone is the swagger, the overinflated self-assurance, the ego, the hubris, the dismissive wave of the hand.

There used to be a time in this country when anyone complaining about the GOP party line would be dismissed with a quick, short, snarky comment, and then it would be on to how their stocks were doing, the sports scores, and how they hired a Mexican under the table for next to nothing to do a repair without the appropriate permits, and saved a bundle!

The simple fact that they feel EMBATTLED, and need assurance from one another, is proof positive that we are making SERIOUS headway, and the mood of the nation is trending our way!
