With “Last Throes” Debunked, Rice Unveils “The Latte Defense”
http://thinkprogress.org/2005/09/15/iraq-latte/

On the “deadliest day of violence in Baghdad since the U.S. invasion more than two years ago,” Bill O’Reilly sat down with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to examine the real issues in Iraq: It’s all about the lattes.

O’Reilly: The truth of the matter is our correspondents at Fox News can’t go out for a cup of coffee in Baghdad.

Rice: Bill, that’s tough. It’s tough. But what — would they have wanted to have gone out for a cup of coffee when Saddam Hussein was in power?

1. Idiot
People could go out for lattes under Saddam. Talk about rewriting history.

2. We go out for latte here because we can't go out for latte there!
Or something like that.

8. I think because she has such a large open forehead that people
assume there are many brains in there. She does NOT fool me. To me, her ideas are stupid, her judgment is stupid - especially about the people she hangs with, her statements aer stupid, her conclusions are stupid, and she herself is stupid. I'm sorry. I just can't get around that. Stupid is as stupid does. And her hairstyles are stupid, too.

15. She is a powerful icon, nothing more
Condoleeza Rice is the poster girl for the reich. In substance her persona is completely impotent, delivering the PR message, designed by her corporatist puppet masters.

Having an afro-American Secretary of State for a fascist junta imposed by sequential coups is the ultimate hypocrisy. She is the perfect disguise. How does one address a walking, talking, living, breathing lie? She is an animated programed Potemkin village for a society and foreign policy based upon brutal force, inequity, racism, and class warfare.

9. Actually, there was no problem getting lattes when Hussein was in power
One thing you pick up from articles by people like Robert Fisk (who spent considerable time in Baghdad both before and after the invasion) is that Iraq's restaurant industry has been decimated. Baghdad used to have a lot of great restaurants. Not anymore. Almost all of the ones that the US didn't bomb have been closed by our fundamentalist 'allies' because they served wine, allowed women to eat alone, or some other pseudo-religious excuse.

Sure, sounds unimportant, but restaurants (like electricity, running water and trash pickup) are one of those ammenities that civilization is supposed to allow.

11. I'd sure like to see a "snapshot" of Iraq before and after
I'm sure it would be enlightening.

The mere fact that Condosleeeeeza intimates that you couldn't go out for a latte under Saddam's rule makes me believe it was a beautiful place to live...

How long had it been since Saddam was up to shenanigans? Twelve years or so?

I could hardly be more frustrated! ARGH! I'm so sick of this mess.

13. The Key to Victory: A Starbucks on every corner in Baghdad
Since the mis-Administration refuses to define what a victory would look like, I think we can now infer that it woul include LOTS of Starbucks. That's what freedom is all about, right?
