Please stop expecting The Daily Show to do the media's job
It's a comedy show and yes it has some serious moments but it is not an investigative, Whitehouse or pentagon reporter. It's a 30 minute show 4 nights a week, give it a break.

2. isn't it a sad commentary, though, that a comedy show gives us more news
and more accurately, than anything in the msm?

22. When a Comedy Show wins Peabody Awards,
ot makes you wonder if the rest of the media isn't a type of comedy, also.

6. No. I refuse.
It has to do the media's job with no ifs, ands, or buts about it. So, that's that.

11. Here's the problem
As soon as Jon and the group start taking themselves seriously, the joke is over. When Jon starts doing real, hardball, interviews and the reporters start doing serious investigative reporting, TDS becomes what it parodies and loses the bulk of its audience.

It's a comedy show. It just happens to be better at reporting real news than the "real" media it parodies. You may want it to be more, but be careful what you wish for...

17. I'm just having fun
I'm posting these things tongue in cheek. Isn't it ironic that this discussion is about not taking TDS so seriously, yet my replies are regarded as earnest.

I think any of us can discern a skit by TDS as a parody or satire ... or whatever. When Stewart sits down with Richard Clarke and talks about his book/books, I think any reasonable person can identify the jokes from the serious discourse. And to pretend that there is not any serious discourse in these interviews is just silly.

Further, if the author of this topic can clarify with a specific example, it would assist in determining the purpose of his/her posting.

25. I've heard people complain that he goes too easy on his...
neocon guests. In my opinion, it's his responsibility to make his guests not feel as though they're being attacked; he's still the show's host. I think that he still pushes quite a bit without going over the line where neocons would refuse to go on the show. (I personally don't care if neocons go on the show, but it's his responsibility to keep the show successful by having a wide array of guests.)

26. I agree with you and thank you for your response
However, I do have a confession to make. I did get upset with Stewart when he started to follow up on the notion that democracy might have actually started to become a greater reality in the ME, and Bush might have accidently shared some of the credit for it.

I really thought, how could Stewart, a person I respect, be so naive.

With that said, politics is a hot topic by nature. Even in a comic vain it's bound to set some people off. Just look at the corruption and radicalization of the right in this country over the past decade. We've been through a lot of bullshit. Just look at the absurd drama of the right hunting Clinton's penis ... stolen elections ... an illegal invasion of a sovereign country ... and the MSM assists in this macabre facade.

We're looking for someone ... anyone ... with access to fight for us. So ... it's understandable to me why some might place the burden on Stewart.

8. It is true
We put an awful lot of pressure on Jon to carry the cause for us. It's really unfair of us to do so. He is an actor. He is an entertainer who finds his material in political satire.

In the end, however, if we expect him to be "our hero" or the "saviour of the left wing" we will be sadly disappointed.

Our deification of The Daily Show and Jon Stewart is sad because it is symptomatic of the the lack of leadership in the Democratic Party and our thirst for real, true leadership. Jon is a substitute for lack of a true leader.

I like The Daily Show and respect Jon but I won't put the added pressure on him of being the salvation of the Democratic party.

15. Very, very well said.
A comedy show followed by puppets making prank phone calls does a better job informing America than Crossfire did.
