Mission of liberal-oriented film club is to inspire social action and entertain
Joe Garofoli, Chronicle Staff Writer

Saturday, December 3, 2005

Adam Werbach had one of the more public soul-searchings of any liberal in the weeks after President Bush's re-election last year. The former Sierra Club president nailed a thesis that railed about what's wrong with the Democratic Party to its national headquarters, then stirred up the green movement by declaring that "environmentalism is dead."

This week, the San Francisco resident is debuting a different strategy in his quest to help liberals connect with each other: an activist-oriented film club.

For a $14.95-a-month membership, Werbach's Ironweed Film Club will mail a couple of DVDs every four weeks to show at house parties. The offerings will be organized around a theme, with this month's being "boundaries," a timely one with President Bush touting his immigration policy.

If the partygoers are inspired to work on immigration issues after seeing "Wetback: The Undocumented Documentary," a 2005 film about Central Americans trying to cross into the United States through Mexico, Ironweed's Web site -- www.ironweedfilms.com -- will point them to an immigrant rights organization.
