I figured out why the fundies are so worried about Christmas
It is easier for them to carry god on thier lips than on their hearts. You see if there was a war on christmas they might be afaid of actually acting like a Christian rather than just proclaiming to be one.

1. It's amazing how many of them want retail corporations to exploit...
...the birth of the Savior.

6. NeverGiveUp, I think. Not that you asked me, but I think that's it!
Edited on Sun Dec-04-05 10:33 PM by tnlefty
I was listening to John Lennon's 'Imagine' and 'Happy Xmas (War is Over)', earlier today and I think that your sentiments are correct. The supposed "War On Christmas" is a distraction, and part of the distraction is to make some feel better about blowing men, women and children to bits, destroying a country, and killing our men and women in uniform, all based on lies.

edit: typo

4. But there is no war on Christmas
Oh, I get it now.

They want to keep the symbolism, not the reality. And the present situation makes them uncomfortable, now more than ever before.

The "peace and love" message is no longer operative in this government. The national discourse is ruled by Old-Testament death and vengeance.

They can no longer reconcile Christ's message versus the murderous policies that make up this government.

Hmmm.

7. Exactomundo as the fonz would say
It's kind of like the christmas episode where fonzie eat ravolio alone. Remember his facade of being cool and in control was shattered and he was alone and vulnerable. The fundies always need something in thier to keep thier froth in thier mouth fresh otherewise the might notice the dryness of thier heart.

13. And they certainly seem to need that froth...
Should we pity them or fight them as an enemy? It's complicated.

9. It actually has nothing to do with Christ or religion at all.
What we're seeing is symptomatic of the same social illness that befell the Germans in their descent into Nazism. Milton Mayer wrote about it in the book "They thought they were free" - people worshipped the 'form' but not the substance.

This 'war on Christmas' is the same as 'support the troops', or 'respect the office of the president', or singing the national anthem at NASCAR races. It has no real meaning at all - the ritual has become paramount.

11. Without this "War on Christmas" bullshit...
the national dialogue would be more focused on things like Iraq, the economy, or health care, all of which make the Right squirm a lot more than this holidays silliness.

12. i've heard the "attack on xmas" from a few people now
i stopped arguing, i merely point out that it seems their faith isn't very strong if it can't resist the "attack" of the megastore clerks not acknowledging it.

a person of strong faith doesn't need their religion validated by everyone they come across.

14. Next time, say, "Just to clarify, you'd rather these corporations...
...exploit Christmas specifically, rather than the holidays in general? I'd rather they all just shut up and let the day remain sacred."

16. Oh of course
But I think it's more so to keep their fundie base rilled up and active and not thinking about anything else or doubting Bush and the other republican base so they'll vote for them in 2006. If they talk about what is going on they'll surely lose their base because of all the corrutpion and scandals going on and EVERYONE knows the republicans are ruiling. You can't blame anything on the democrats. So they have to do something.

20. Maybe they can't blame this on the Democrats, but they are
blaming it on the liberals. To most fundies, it is the same thing.

18. It's part of the tribulation hysteria
The war on Christmas, imo is part of a manufactured campaign to confirm to the fundies that they are under attack by satanic, godless forces. It helps them dig into their ideological niche and confirms their apocalyptic fantasies about the approaching end-times. The end-timers unquestioningly support the invasion of the ME because it fits in with their fantasy about establishing God's kingdom on earth. Somehow, their masters have managed to conflate the Neocon agenda with their own masturbatory dreams of a christian apocalypse -- as if they had anything at all to do with each other. These folks feel most justified in their delusions when they believe they're under siege.

A war on christmas will sustain them through the holidays -- until it's time for their next fix...er...manufactured outrage.

merry fucking christmas amerika!

:headbang:

22. I think its a misplaced grievance. An irrational response to
a world passing them by. They cry and moan about liberals and christmas, yet their employer has them working nightshifts on "holidays".

Surely the biggest threat to Christmas is in fact consumerism.

24. I don't know if you're old enough to remember, but 15-20 years ago,
it was the Fundies who were rabidly anti-Christmas. My Fundie brothers would make anyone who celebrated Christmas in any way...cards, trees, gifts, dinners, gatherings, etc suffer for it. They ruined many a Christmas gathering for us.
