Everyone laughed and said we wouldn't draw a crowd. I laughed and said we would. In the end, UA security confirmed that we had well over 600 people. I sent out press releases to all of the major Ohio media.

I need your help with this!

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=8&u=/ap/20031017/ap_on_en_tv/people_jerry_springer

Please go there and rate this a 5. Please!

Also, here is the story from the local paper (Was on front page of the paper, circulation 500,000).

4. Thanks to anyone who 5's this story, I really appreciate it!
I spent about a month organizing this. I don't think it could have gone any better.

NOTE: Jerry came for free, and did a fundraiser for us that night for free. In contrast, the Kent State University Repuglicans invited Bill O'Leilly.... he tried to charge them 80k.

I saw the coverage of his speech when he annoucned he would not run for office. He was terrific. I wish he'd give up his show as soon as the contract is up and hit the lecture circuit for the Dem Party. The guy is a heartfelt speaker. Some people have the gift and he's one of them.

15. If you are in college now
You are the same age now thatI was when I campaigned for Jerry, sadly that also means I could be your mother. Let's not go there.

He is a very charismatic intelligent man. He believes the right things. You are young enough to think that anything is possible and thankfully there are young people who know that because as you age it is forgotten.

My advice:

1-Don’t sleep with him.

2-Remember that he doesn’t have a prayer of winning, hasn’t had a prayer since that ugly incident with the check in KY, forget the show.

3-Enjoy yourself. There isn’t much else to believe in Ohio these days.

21. The KY thing was a sad story really
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 10:22 PM by spotbird
he was a young, handsome rising star when he unfortunately paid a prostitute with a check. The prostitute then tried to blackmail him, rather than become a victim he came clean, publicly. He was mayor of Cincinnati but went ahead and admitted what he had done and resigned. As far as I remember there was no police involvement, but this is 25+ years ago so my memory may be favorable to Springer.

The next election he ran again and was the top vote-getter and Mayor of Cincinnati (in Cincinnati the mayor is the candidate who gets the most votes in the city council election). Cincinnati is conservative but they knew Springer, they liked his honesty, they forgave him. What Jerry didn’t get was that they didn’t know him in Cleveland, Toledo and Akron so the scandal made him look like a garden variety pervert up there. When he tried for the Democratic primary for Governor in ’82 he was trounced. Dick Celeste won the primary and the general. Jerry went back to Cincinnati where he was still loved and became anchor of the local news.

The rest is history. One other interesting aside, when he started his talk show it was very serious, it evolved when the rest of talk TV went trash.

I left Ohio 20 years ago, so my part of the story ends at this point.

I rated the story a 5, but as a UA alum, I'm disappointed that I didn't know he was going to be up there. Honestly, I hope he doesn't run, however I would have liked to hear him speak. Congrats on the great turnout! :)
