Ted Stevens and the fall of the republican party
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 10:21 AM by nomaco-10
This man is truly in the throes of some sort of mental breakdown or an advanced stage of senile dementia. His performance on the floor of the senate last night could only be characterized of that of a man with some serious mental and moral issues.

It was just what, a couple of weeks ago that Stevens nearly blew an artery on the floor and threatened to quit the senate once again if his "bridges to nowhere" got taken out of a bill? This man who claims to have inserted ANWR into the defense bill for the benefit of all the poor victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the gulf region, was asked then to delay the funds earmarked for his bridges to nowhere and allow that money to be used for distaste relief in the gulf region. It was a real disappointment to me that someone from our side of the aisle didn't rise up to point that out to him last night.

The 82 year old senator ranted incoherently over the removal of his ANWR bill and said "This is the worst day of my life", then in the same breath added "he wishes this day would never end". (huh?) He also promised retribution to everyone that voted against his pet project and promised to personally visit everyone of their states to let their constituents know they didn't care about the hurricane victims. He also accused the democrats of not bothering to even read his bill and further insulted them by accusing them of not even visiting the devastated region. He also stated, he would not offer his friendship nor his help to any of those that came to his committees in the coming year, and then closed by saying he was "saying goodbye to the senate". Unbelievable!

I was very proud of our dems last night, particularly Kennedy, Durbin and Byrd. I'm more optimistic than ever about 2006 and 08. It's almost joyous to watch the complete disintegration of the republican party. With special prosecuters investigating the Plame outing, the senate's promise to investigate the illegal wire tapping of America, Delay's money laundering scandal, the SEC is investigating Frist for stock fraud, and even the impending hearing in the SCOTUS over the redistricting of Texas, Abramhoff and Scanlon are squealing like pigs, it may just be the happiest new year we've had in a long while.

1. Stevens did seem as if he were reverting back to childhood.
Throwing a fit on the Senate floor; not very seemly, was it? It was so refreshing to see our Dems stick together-well, mostly-and get something done, or rather undone. And all this potential good news bodes well, I hope, for next year. :toast:

2. This was quite a performance
sort of like a temper tantrum of a 2 year old.

Also he was pissed -- claiming all the "good" that the money would do -- while not telling how much the oil mega bucks companies would be making.

Sorry that oil should stay their for future generations -- way in the future.

Oh yes he is gonna visit all the states with Senators who voted against him -- and he almost sounded like he was going to put a hit out on Washington State.

10. Oil from ANWR
(Yesterday I spelled it ANWAR) Anyway oil revenues from ANWR would bolster the financial holdings of the 'Alaska Permanent Fund', an interesting program in which a percentage of profits from Alaska's mineral resources pay an annual dividend to each citizen of Alaska.

I believe that was the Senator's real goal.

The Alaska Permanent Fund is a good plan which should be endorsed in other states.

4. Ted's been trying to get the drilling passed for years
He tried every trick in the book and to his dismay - no dice. I find it quite satisfying and I love Harry Reid.

Although on CNN this morning they really tried to drum up emotional support for ol' Ted - "poor Ted Stevens; 82 years old and something he's worked on most of his career has been squashed - he's heartbroken". (paraphrased).

Hee hee hee!

7. Frist Is Totally Inept
The more I see this doofus, the more I'd love the Repugnicans to nominate him (if he isn't behind bars) in 2008. This silver-spooned goon has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory several times. Besides the fact the man brought votes to the floor when he didn't have his ass covered (several times) to his pissing off the fundies then running back to kiss their asses, he's been the worst legislative leader I've ever seen. Keep up the fine work, Bill and may your HCA stock keep those investigators busy for the new year. Trent Lott has to be the ultimate Cheshire cat these days.

On our side, many kudos to Senators Reid and Durbin who have fought the good fight and outmanuevered Repugnicans where they could and exploited their ineptness where possible. Yesterday was a culmination of a lot of hard work by both men is bringing Democrats together when the votes really matter while allowing each Senator enough autonomy to work their local interests. Even Liebermann came back to the reservation yesterday. Maybe Joe's having some second thoughts about pissing off so many of his friends and constituents.

Stevens' Captain Queeg routine was a sad state on what being in power too long does to you. For years he played the back bencher...wheeling and dealing his votes with others for perks and other chits. Robert Byrd built his power doing the same thing. The difference is Stevens overplayed...he expected votes and thought the Senate was some sort of social club where friends and favors owed rise above party, state or national interest.

May Senator Stevens pack his bags and head to a nice long retirement on his Island to nowhere. And while he's at it, take the corrupt Murkowskis with him.

8. It would seem the repukes will be too busy.......
defending themselves against criminal charges, that they won't have time to pass these bullshit laws.

I agree the drip-drip-drip of scandals at a certain point, will overflow their constituents' bucket of confidence. The kool-aid drinkers will never wake up. But the normal rational folks who were originally deceived by the assholes will have to admit they were wrong, if only to themselves.

I too, am hoping and working for a better year in 2006. :toast:

12. This is my favorite thread of the morning!
Thanx, you guys for brightening the morning so much. I must get depressed too easily! I love this place, you all put up with my foul disposition, snide remarks, general stupidity, etc. You are indeed tolerant!

Have a great holiday and we'll kick their collective asses in the coming year!
